Mailbox Monday 8.17.15: books, crochet and a new bookmark

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

Happy Monday everyone. I always find that Monday’s are better when there are books involved.
I took that mailbox photo above while out on a drive one weekend and I thought it would be perfect for a MM post.

Anyway, onto my mailbox…

I purchased two books lately and one arrived for review. I also got a new bookmark that reads “My workout is reading in bed until my arms hurt.” I couldn’t resist it.
It Ended Badly: Thirteen of the Worst Breakups in History by Jennifer Wright arrived via AmazonVine. I am halfway through this one, and have gotten some laughs out of it already.
“A history of heartbreak-replete with beheadings, uprisings, creepy sex dolls, and celebrity gossip-and its disastrously bad consequences throughout time.”

Get Out of My Life, but First Could You Drive Me & Cheryl to the Mall: A Parent’s Guide to the New Teenager by Anthony E. Wolf . I saw this one and thought it might come in handy. The only books I have read in regards to raising children are by Dr. Phil and his are very good.
“When Anthony E. Wolf’s witty and compassionate guide to raising adolescents was first published, its amusing title and fresh approach won it widespread admiration. Beleaguered parents breathed sighs of relief and gratitude. Now Dr. Wolf has revised and updated his bestseller to tackle the changes of the past decade.”

While on vacation a few weeks back, I popped into the Barnes and Noble specifically looking for The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick. I found it in the bargain section for a nice price, which was an added plus. I cannot wait to read this one.
“Meet Pat. Pat has a theory: his life is a movie produced by God. And his God-given mission is to become physically fit and emotionally literate, whereupon God will ensure a happy ending for him — the return of his estranged wife Nikki. (It might not come as a surprise to learn that Pat has spent time in a mental health facility.)”

I watched the film version not too long ago and it was really good. Has anyone read or watched this one?

And last but not least, when the summer begins to come to an end, I tend to get inspired to pick up my hook and yarn. I found a pattern through Red Heart called Chic Cowl Neck Poncho. Although the pattern calls for a chunky yarn, I am using a different kind, so I had to adjust the pattern accordingly since my hook size and yarn selection affect the stitch counts, etc. So far, so good.

That’s all for now. What has arrived in your mailbox lately?
Enjoy your week!

  1. I love the title of Get Out of My Life but First Could You Drive Me and Cheryl to the Mall – it sounds like something straight out of a teen’s mouth. I want to read Silver Linings Playbook too – I loved the movie.

  3. I liked both the SLP book and movie and like you I read the book after watching it. Both are good in different ways!
It Ended Badly sounds like a fun read too.

  4. I’ve been meaning to read The Silver Lining Playbook for a long time now, I heard such great things about it!
I’m the same as you but with my knitting needles; I don’t knit a lot in the summer, but usually in August, I get inspired to knit again. I’ve been eyeing projects left waiting for a few days now!

  5. Hi Naida,

I have more wool stashed around the house than I know what to do with, even though I have so far managed to convince hubbie that it is all allocated to defined projects 🙂

I usually end up by simply crocheting afghan blankets for sale in the charity shop, although I am going to make a concerted effort this year to dig out the knitting needles and make something a little more adventurous.

I love the colour of your crochet work.

I also find myself eyeing up bookmarks wherever we go these days, as I came across someone with a fanatstic collection and they looked so good. I keep trying to convince myself that as they are only very small, they won’t take up too much room, but I don’t think that I am going to get away with it somehow!!

Have a great week and enjoy all your new books 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne. I have a yarn stash as well, lol, I can’t help myself. I tried knitting many years ago but it never took. I need to try that again, I love the look of knitted stitches. I would love to see your work! I’m sure it is beautiful.
The bookmarks are another thing that is hard to resist lol. They make some really cute ones.

Happy weekend and happy reading 🙂

  7. I love that mailbox. 🙂 I don’t have an individual mailbox unfortunately. So, I can only admire them in photos and other people’s. The bookmark is perfect–and sometimes too true. Enjoy your new books–they all sound good.
