Top Ten Tuesday: 10 songs I wish were books

What a fun TTT‘s topic was a few weeks back, combining two of my favorite things, books and music. I missed out on posting this last month but I figured better late than never.

Good books and good music can both move you. Each are dependent upon the reader/listener as to the affect they will have. Not surprisingly, my picks are mainly songs that could be romance novels. The lyrics to the songs on my list would make for great stories.

10 songs I wish were books

1. Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons
My list would never be complete without my favorite Mumford and Sons, a band whose songs tell awesome stories. I saw them sing this song live in concert a few years ago and my soul just about left my body. Love them.
“But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really f**ked it up this time
Didn’t I, my dear?”..
What wasn’t his fault? What comes next? This one would be a tragic love story and it would also be about a personal journey. It would be centered around a Byronic hero and contain plenty of poetic prose and references to literary classics. This book would have an ending that is up to interpretation.

 

2.  I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For by U2
One of the greatest bands of all time and their beautiful songs tend to tell stories.
“I have climbed highest mountains
I have run through fields
Only to be with you”…
I could see an epic historical novel that spans the ages based on this one. There’d be themes of love, loss and redemption in this book. I even see a time-travel theme here. A mini-series would follow.

 

3. Leave Your Lover by Sam Smith
I think this would make for a great novel with the whole unrequited love theme. The greatest line in this song is “I’m in love with you and you will never know”. I see a NY Times bestseller here. Also, possibly a movie version afterwards where Sam Smith himself would have a cameo appearance.

4. Used To Love You by Gwen Stefani
I just love Gwen Stefani and this song quickly became a favorite.
“You thought there were no boundaries…What, you just pushed me too far…I guess nobody taught you…Nobody taught you how to love”…
I wonder what he did. There is a fine line between love and hate and the novel would tell us all. It would have a HEA for the heroine, who is a feminist, and she would tell her story through well written flashbacks. This would be a book about moving on.

 

5. Blinding by Florence and the Machine
I think this would be a great futuristic/post apocalyptic/action adventure story where the heroine starts life over, stronger than she was before. Once she realizes her inner strengths, she leaves an unhealthy relationship behind. It would be a story about transformation and endurance. Steven Spielberg would direct it.
“No more dreaming of the dead as if death itself was undone
No more calling like a crow for a boy, for a body in the garden
No more dreaming like a girl so in love, so in love”…

 

6. Waiting in Vain by Bob Marley
This would make for a great love story. Was it all in vain after everything? I see a quiet, bookish hero in this novel, in love with a girl who sees him as just a friend. This could be a great new adult romance.
“I don’t wanna wait in vain for your love.
From the very first time I rest my eyes on you, girl,
My heart says follow through.
But I know, now, that I’m way down on your line…”

 

7. One And Only by Adele
Come to think of it, pretty much all Adele songs could be made into novels. This is one of my favorites.
“I dare you to let me be your your one and only…I promise I’m worthy to hold in your arms”…
This could be a book about a woman who is in love with her best friend and finally wants to let him know how she feels. Best friends turned lovers storyline with a HEA ending. Set in current day New York City.

 

8. Heart’s on Fire by Passenger
“Well I don’t know where and I don’t know when
But I know we’ll be lovers again
I’ll see you some day before the end”…
Another love song that seems to have a great background story to it. He is obviously still full of longing for his lost love and hopeful they will be together again. I see a couple here who have been separated for a few years but find each other once again. Preferably an epistolary novel.

9. On My Mind by Ellie Goulding
This catchy song is a great premise for a contemporary romance novel. “It’s a little blurry how the whole thing started….” The lyrics tell a good story and she has obviously still got him on her mind. Do they get back together? I hope so, but there are bumps along the way.

 

10. It Must Have Been Love by Roxette
Because I want to know what happened. Why is it over now? What separated these people? This one wouldn’t have a HEA but it would make for a nice tear jerker.
“It must have been love but it’s over now.
It must have been good but I lost it somehow.”….
