…Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me….
–Maya Angelou
read the poem in its entirety here…
Back in high school, Maya Angelou was the first poet whose work I read that resonated with me. She has long since been a favorite. I read her books I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Singin’ and Swingin’ and Gettin’ Merry Like Christmas and I was just in awe at her writing and storytelling. The words flowed off the pages, captivating and inspiring me. Reading her work I knew she had been through so much and survived to tell her story, that alone is inspirational.

Hi Naida,
I had a set of Mary Angelou books handed into the charity shop a couple of weeks ago. I did flick through them before putting them out for sale and couldn’t make up my mind whether or not to buy them for myself. Needless to say, the decision was made when they sold almost immediately and now, having read that lovely poem, I really do wish I had kept hold of them – Such is life I guess !
I do hope that you are feeling much better now and that a diagnosis is somewhere near to being made.
Take Care and have a good week 🙂

Thanks Yvonne and yes, her work is really moving, I enjoy it. Have a good week as well 🙂 No diagnosis as of yet, but I just had a few tests done with my yearly physical so maybe that will help clear things up.

The confidence in that poem is mesmerizing. That love of being a woman. I read the poem a while ago, and your excerpt happily reminded me of it.
