Sunday Post 6/4/17 Netflix, Crochet and Currently Reading

sundaypost

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…

Happy Sunday everyone, it is a gorgeous morning here in Jersey. We are supposed to get rain around noon though so I think I’ll go read outside a little after I’m finished with this post. I planted sunflowers this week on one of the sunny days and I have got my fingers crossed with those. It has been a few years since I planted them. They can be so delicate the first few weeks, once they sprout if a hard rainfall comes, forget it, they die crushed by the rain. I use the mammoth sunflower seeds and there are years they grow to over six feet tall, then some summers they don’t make it at all. I also planted my usual marigold, morning glory and zinnia seeds a few weekends ago. Those I plant each summer and are they are easier to grow. I’ll share pics once they bloom.

On a different note, I was hooked on a Netflix Documentary called The Keepers this past week and I watched all seven episodes in two days. It’s hard to say that I recommend this real crime documentary because it is very disturbing especially the first hand accounts of victims, but if you like watching real crime dramas unfold, yes I recommend it.

Some of it is hard to watch as it deals with the 1969 unsolved murder of two women, one being a young nun. It also centers around a pedophile/rapist priest and the conspiracies and cover-ups surrounding this case. This documentary was really emotional I even teared up a little. All these years later, this nun’s former students who are grandmothers now, set up a Facebook page and are trying to find any information on her murder. I went to Catholic school myself from grades K-12 so it just really I don’t even know how to word it, it is disturbing for anyone to watch, Catholic school alumni or not but I guess it just resonated with me since I went myself.

Anyway on a lighter note, the crochet in the photo above is of my current project, a shrug I’m trying to work up. I’m using Simply Soft yarn in an icy blue color but it looks dark in the picture due to the dim lighting and the Nook lighting behind it. This is the real color in natural sunlight below.

I’m trying to make a granny square shrug. My cubicle at work is directly underneath an air conditioning vent, so that inspired this project because I am usually always cold at work. Although I always bring an extra cardigan with me, I thought I’d like to whip up a cozy shrug too. I may actually whip up a little neck scarf next also.

Reading wise, I dove into An Almond for a Parrot by Wray Delaney which is good so far, I’m only about 45 pages or so in.
Last week I finished up Crescendo by Amy Weiss and it was amazing, my review is here if you are interested. The author re-tweeted me which was awesome, I love when that happens. And her dad, who is also a writer, re-tweeted me too. *yay*

That about covers it for now. I’ve been looking for something good to watch on Netflix next. Any recommendations? I’m looking for documentaries or a series. Hubby says I watch way too much crime drama, but he needs to mind his own business. j/k I just remind him he watches too much Sports Center/ESPN and then we move on with our day. And when all else fails, there’s always Snapped which they tend to play it for several hours almost daily so catching an episode or two is easy when I have the time. I actually watched the first episode of 13 Reasons Why last weekend but it hasn’t grabbed me like I hoped it would. I may keep watching though.

Enjoy your Sunday, what are you up to?

  1. True stories of horrendous crimes, in the form of the written word as well as documentaries, sometimes disturb me also. Sometimes I stay away from them. With that, The Keeper sounds worth watching.

    Have a great Sunday!

  2. Hi Naida,

Sunday dawned bright and sunny here also, so we were up and about early to try and make some changes to one of our Wiltshire ‘Treasure Trails’ – it’s a great hobby and keeps us fit and active. The promised rain arrived mid afternoon though, so now we are back home and I am catching up on some chores (between answering a few comments!).

I don’t tend to watch much television at all these days and I can’t say that I really miss it. I would probably be searching out for any old detective series if I was here on my own for any length of time, but right now I have plenty of other things to keep me occupied.

I loved your review of ‘Crescendo’ and I hope that you are enjoying your new book 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne, the Treasure Trails sound like fun, I like the idea of it. It sounds like it is popular over in the UK. That’s great you and your husband enjoy them, I like outdoor activities too.
      Enjoy your week 🙂

  3. I’m always impressed with how tall sunflowers can get! Kind of amazing. And I saw The Keepers on Netflix and wondered about it, it sound like it’s pretty intense.

As for recommendations, have you watched Luther on Netflix? I just binged the first three seasons (I love those short BBC seasons) and it’s pretty good. It’a crime show. And I watched 13 Reasons recently… pretty thought provoking show.

    Have a great week!

    • Hi Greg, I love how tall they get, they are so pretty. And the way they turn towards the sun is cool.
I’ll have to check out Luther, I’ve heard of it. I used to watch Ripper Street which I think was a BBC show too.
      Enjoy your week also!

  4. I hope your sunflowers do well! I am terrible at gardening, but it doesn’t stop me from trying. I know all too well the allure of Netflix. They have some good documentaries on there, don’t they? I haven’t seen The Keepers, but it sounds interesting.

I hope you have a great week!

  5. I love sunflowers too, and like you, grew them a few years back. They were huge! At least 7 feet tall. My little guy thought they were pretty awesome! I hope yours do well, I should try again this year too 🙂

The Keepers looks good. Disturbing, definitely. I don’t watch a lot of TV or shows but when I get into something I binge watch.

Found you via the Sunday Post!

  7. Naida, I just finished watching The Keepers with my husband as well. I felt very, very similarly to you as I also went to a Catholic school from K thru 8th grade. I don’t think my husband fully understood how much this hit home and also how horrifying I found it. I really think it bothered me the most as being Catholic used to be such an important part of my life. Anyways enough of the negative lol. I still hope many, many people watch it. Have you watched the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest? Definitely something that I think you would enjoy. Have a great week!

    • Hi Sam, ugh so you know how heart wrenching The Keepers was! And you went to Catholic school too.

I haven’t seen the HBO ones, I’ll have to check them out, thanks!

  9. I watched some of The Keepers, but need to finish. I read a books yeeears ago by a Lakota woman who talked about the stuff that went on when they were forced to go to Catholic schools in the 60s-70s. Pretty disturbing. Ohhh I love the color of that yarn. You’ll have to show us when you are finished.

  10. Oh I can’t wait to see how your shrug turns out. The color is beautiful and that looks like such a comfy piece to have. And, definitely show us pics of the blooms. Sunflowers are some of my favorites – you can’t help but smile when you see them!
