Sunday Post 10/8/17: Lady Liberty, Bookish Stuff etc.

sunday (249x249)
The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…

Good morning blogland, can you believe the first week in October is already over? I hope you are all doing well. I feel like I almost don’t even know what to talk about this morning. These are crazy, crazy times we are living in. I’ve stopped watching the news the past few days, I can’t bear to look anymore.

Well, it’s a rainy Sunday here in NJ and I’ll be doing some blog hopping this morning before getting back to my current read, which is perfect for this time of year. It’s actually a re-read for me and I’m almost finished.

I went to the the bookstore last weekend and my daughter grabbed a copy of Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. It’s a collection of poetry.

We both read it, my thoughts on it will be up in a few days. While there I grabbed the latest Tessa Dare, The Duchess Deal for my shelves as well. These copies of Shakespeare were tempting to add to my collection of pretty books too, but I controlled myself. Aren’t they very 1960’s vintage looking? I like it.

Also, we went to Liberty Island a few weekends ago. It was a gorgeous day. It’s been several years since we last went, and I enjoy everything about going there. The ferry ride, the view, the way Lady Liberty kind of appears while you are on the boat getting to the island. There’s so much history there, we didn’t stop at Ellis Island this time around though. We had lunch on Liberty Island, the sun was shining and we hung out by the water enjoying the view. I’ll close with a few pics that I took with my Canon.

Approaching the island from the ferry. Everyone gets excited when you see the statue getting closer.

“Although you cannot see Lady Liberty’s feet clearly she is in fact standing among a broken shackle and chains, with her right foot raised, depicting her moving forward away from oppression and slavery.”read more about the Statue of Liberty here.

This was the view while we were enjoying our lunch outside. That is where the boats dock to take visitors on and off the island.

People were hanging out on the water on boats and this sailboat caught my eye. Looks like fun doesn’t it?

Well, that’s all for now. I hope you enjoy your weekend. It’s an extended one here with Monday off for Columbus Day so more reading/crocheting time for me. 🙂 What are you up to?

  1. We went to the Liberty science center in August but it was raining so we couldn’t go to liberty state park. My daughter wants to go back so we are planning to go back at some point before the end of the year.

It is a rather crummy day in NJ. I think it’s the perfect day to read all day. 🙂

Have a great week! Happy Reading!

  2. I am on Long Island. Yesterday it hit 81 degrees Fahrenheit!

It has been a few years since I have visited Liberty Island. I should get there again soon.

I am looking forward to your post on Milk and Honey.

    • Hi Brian. This warm weather has been crazy lately. We’ve got rain here since yesterday and they say it will really downpour later today. Perfect reading weather.
      Enjoy your week!

  3. Hi Naida,

Hubbie was taken on the Liberty Island trip, when he was Stateside working for a US company, many years ago now and my best friend got to take the trip with her husband as part of her 50th birthday trip and shortly before her untimely death from breast cancer! So I have lots of picture memories, even though I haven’t taken the trip myself!

The weather today, here in my little corner of the UK, has been amazing, more like July than October and we spent the day at the coast with family, catching those last few rays before winter closes in.

I have become quite strict with myself about adding any more physical books to my shelves and in fact I am going to have to start culling a few shelves over the coming weeks, even though the most upsetting thing will be that I won’t have read any of the books I shall be passing on to friends, family and charity!

I can’t help that I do seem to be quite lucky with my Goodreads Giveaway wins though, so any new wins will just have to stay 🙂

We don’t have any more long weekends until Christmas now, but I hope that you enjoy your extra day off tomorrow 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne. The Liberty Island visit is really a nice one. We have had the same kind of warm weather here too. It’s nice for spending time outside and with family, even better.
I know what you mean, I have toooo many books here myself and have been donating some from time to time.
Enjoy your week and happy reading 🙂

  4. Happy Sunday, Naida! Your photos are terrific. Milk and Honey sounds like an interesting collection. I like the vintage look of the Shakespeare books, too, but would need to clear a few books out of my shelves first, before adding any more. Enjoy your extra day off!

  5. I haven’t read The Dead Zone yet but I will be looking forward to your thoughts. I’ve been in the mood for something by King and just grabbed Mr. Mercedes while I was at the library. I believe they are making a TV show based off of this one so I would like to read it. My son got to see Lady Liberty this summer while on a school trip. He loved the entire experience! It sounds like you had a great week. I hope that this one goes just as well for you!

    • Hi Sam. The Dead Zone is a good one, I want to try and watch the movie version once I’m done reading. I tried to read Mr. Mercedes and I couldn’t get into it. I did see that are making a tv show from it. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the book, I’ll probably give it another try one day.
The Liberty trip is fun. Happy reading 🙂

  6. Glad to hear you had such a nice trip to Liberty Island. Your pictures are lovely and it looks like you had great weather too.

Those Shakespeare books look so cool. I’m not sure I could have resisted purchasing a few of those, haha.

  7. I hope you are enjoying your extra day off! Looks like a fun time at Liberty Island. I’ve been to NYC several times but have not managed to make it to Ellis Island. One day! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the Rupi Kapur book. I started reading it a while back but it was a library book I didn’t finish in time so I need to check it out again. And, I’m with you, time to step away from the news. I want to be informed but sometimes it’s all just too much. Hope you have a great week!
