Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday: December is here! Holiday books, crochet etc.

sunday (249x249)mm

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….

Hello everyone, December is here! I hope you are all doing well. How is your holiday season going? I hope it is as relaxing and as stress free as possible. It’s easy to get overwhelmed this time of year. I found an article online about the holiday blues if anyone is interested. It has some good tips, especially I think it is important “learn to say no” with over scheduling yourself and trying to do it all, it can get really hard. As for myself, I also find it is important is not to give in to the commercialism of it all. That can be very stressful if  you let it.

Also, do you see snow falling on my blog? I don’t know how that’s happening, but okay …lol. I must have something set up without realizing it. Well, I figured I’d combine MM and The Sunday Post this morning so onto my mailbox….

I received a copy of No-one Ever Has Sex on Christmas Day via NetGalley and I’m hoping to get to that one this month, it looks like fun.

I also received Lalylala’s Beetles Bugs and Butterflies: A Crochet Story of Tiny Creatures and Big Dreams and Dumpling Cats from NetGalley. How cute are these? I figure I’ll get to these after December because I like to crochet something from the pattern books I review, this way I get a feel for the patterns.

LibraryThing sent a copy of Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery by Jenny Colgan which is part of a series but I’m hoping it will do well as a stand alone.

Blogging/reading wise, I’m backed up and still haven’t reviewed Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover, but I will get to it soon I hope. I am in the middle of Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter which is fantastic so far, it is a long one at 573 pages but it reads quickly and I am enjoying it. I received this book from the publisher I think it was last year or so and I’ve been meaning to get to it for a while. There are disappearances, estranged sisters, murders and hidden secrets among a few other plot twists and I’ve been late into the night reading it this week.

Crochet-wise I whipped up a few Christmasey things like these potholders and ornament cozies. I gave a few to my mom on Thanksgiving.

And last but not least, I got to see the NY Knicks play against the Miami Heat this past week at the Garden. Our seats were amazing and we went as a family and what a fantastic way to round off the year, thank you so very much. Hubby got me into the Knicks way back in the 90’s when Ewing and Starks were on the team and we haven’t been to an actual Knicks game for many years, like over a decade. This was our first time going together as a family so it was pretty awesome.

  1. I loved Pretty Girls, too, and I am now eyeing Jenny Colgan’s Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery. I loved one of her other books, and have been wanting to read more.

Enjoy…and thanks for sharing. Thanks for visiting my blog.

  2. Pretty Girls looks good. I have been reading some long books myself. I think that I prefer them as the author gets a chance to develop character, plot and themes.

    Have a great Sunday!

    • Hi Brian, Pretty Girls is really good so far, I am hooked. Like you mention, the author has time to develop the characters more with longer books, you get more depth. Enjoy your week and thanks for stopping in.

  3. I love the snow effect. I wish I could say no to this whole dance showcase thing. LOL It’s definitely adding to my stress right now. At least my Christmas shopping is done. 🙂 I hope you enjoy Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery! I hadn’t read the first two books and had no problem with it, so hopefully you will find the same when you read it. Enjoy your week!

    • HI Wendy. lol I like the snow too, I think we are supposed to get real flurries here this weekend. Good luck with the dance showcase! That’s fun!
Good to know about Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery then, I was wondering about it since it’s a series book. Happy week to you too.

  4. Naida, your crocheted creations are very festive! You certainly have talent. I love the snow on your blog–what a fun feature! It’s early enough in the season that I am not too stressed–yet! Have a great week ahead.

    • Hi Carol, it does look like a fun one. I’m looking forward to reading it.
There’s alot of YouTube tutorials on now, it takes patience, but I find it’s really relaxing.
      Enjoy your week.

  6. I can’t believe it’s December already. I can’t wait to see how your crocheted creations come out – those look too cute. I’m hoping it’ll be a relaxing holiday season as well and hopefully I can catch up on book reviews. I’m so behind! Happy December!

  7. Laughing to myself because I signed onto your blog and said “oh look at the pretty snow,” and then read that it was from a mysterious internet gremlin 🙂 Very pretty though!

I typically host Thanksgiving and Christmas and this is one of the first years I’ve really started pushing back on my family about what we can commit to. We’re still hosting, but it’ll be more on our terms this year (i.e. we pick the menu, time, and whatever else works for us!) So much less stressful this year!

And great book title on your next read… hope it’s a good one!

    • Lol Mallory, when I realized it was snowing on my blog it was a nice surprise. That’s good that you host and keep it as stress free as possible. Happy holidays and happy reading 😊

  8. I have most of Karin Slaughter on my TBRM but have yet to read a single one. Love your knitting, so festive. I have mostly been working but tonight I have off so got stuck into cleaning and putting together some parcels to send out. I am taking part in three secret santas, two of which are online. Loving the snow effect 😀 xxx

  9. Hi Naida,

I could do with some of your Christmas snow on my blog, as on the whole, I am pretty ‘Bah Humbug!’ about the entire holiday season. Mind you, looking at the latest weather forecast, we may have some of the real thing over the next couple of days, even way down here in the south of the country, which is unusual!

My brother and his family are big into American Football and regularly visit Wembley Stadium when teams they support are over from the States. They enjoy their family time out together, so I can imagine just how much the basketball match meant to you, especially in such a splendid stadium.

I am determined that next year I shall make more time for my knitting and crocheting, as every time you publish posts featuring your pieces, I get really envious and want to get my needles out there and then.

Before that however, I really need to get my reading and blogging rate up and under some kind of control. That’s going to be a whole lot more difficult to co-ordinate, so rather than the endless lists I write and then miss, I need to get a proper organisation chart in place!

I am not a fan of the short story, but on the other hand, I can’t really cope with chunkster reads either. I do have a Karin Slaughter book on my desk right now, but at 582 pages and in large format cover at that, I have been a little put off starting ‘The Good Daughter’, which, like your own book, is a stand alone novel. I shall need to choose my time to read this one, very carefully.

Thanks for sharing a great post 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne. It’s been unseasonably warm here this week again but it’s supposed to get cold again now towards the last part of the week into the weekend. We haven’t had snow yet, I’d love to see some real flurries.
It’s really nice enjoying the games as a family and rooting for your teams.

Lol! I need to get my reading and blogging under control too. There’s just never enough hours in the day. Creating a chart sounds like a good idea, I’ve seen some bloggers post about that.

I want to read The Good Daughter too now. The Karin Slaughter book is very good so it doesn’t seem long at all. I keep wanting to get back to it.
Enjoy the rest of your week and thanks for stopping in to chat. 😊

  10. Yeah, November went too fast. Can you believe we’re already nearing Christmas. This month will go by in a blink. Anyway, I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend and the week ahead. I just got back from a week trip. Sorry just be able to visit now. Been so hectic I barely kept up with blogging and reading.

    Happy reading. ❤️😁
