Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 1/21/18: A Memoir, Crochet and Roses etc.

sunday (249x249)mm

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….

Good morning all. January has been a long, cold month but a good one for reading. Bring the Spring please, I am ready.

Reading-wise, I am just about finished with a memoir called Spinster: Making a Life of One’s Own  by Kate Bolick. I wanted to get a third book read this month and I am nearly there so I am really happy with that. I will be onto the fourth book soon after. That is alot of reading for me for one month, since #1 I am a slow reader and #2 sometimes with working full-time and everything else I don’t always have the time to read.

I’ve also made it a goal to get through my review books, some of which I have had for years. I’ve been doing pretty good with it these past couple of months, I also read The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman this month and the Kate Bolick book was an ARC from a few years back. I got my review of The Duchess Deal up yesterday and two more book reviews will be up this coming week I hope.

I finished watching The White Queen on Amazon Prime this past week. I have been obsessed. Like totally obsessed with this show. It takes place mainly during the War of the Roses. This is my favorite historical time period so I have been truly enjoying this series.

I can’t wait for the next season. I eventually need to read this book as I enjoy Philippa Gregory’s work. I haven’t watched much of anything after I finished watching The White Queen this past week, it has been similar to the book hangover. But the good part about that is I’ve been reading instead since I don’t know what to watch next yet.

Watching the series also made for good crocheting time and I finished up my infinity scarf.

Speaking of crochet, new books this past week are:
kale
Crochet Kaleidoscope: Shifting Shapes and Shades Across 100 Motifs by Sandra Eng came via NetGalley.

“Explore a lively twist on crocheted motifs as you shift through various shapes and color combinations. From the traditional granny square to more complex forms, these faceted motifs are the building blocks to creating unique and stunning designs. Crochet Kaleidoscope will help make your projects pop with the perfect mix of color in every stitch”

Sandra Eng is a talented crochet pattern designer and I am looking forward to trying out a motif or two.

Also in the mail…

Hoax: A History of Deception: 5,000 Years of Fakes, Forgeries, and Fallacies by Ian Tattersall arrived through AmazonVine.

“An entertaining collection of the most audacious and underhanded deceptions in the history of mankind, from sacred relics to financial schemes to fake art, music, and identities.

World history is littered with tall tales and those who have fallen for them. Ian Tattersall, a curator emeritus at the American Museum of Natural History, has teamed up with Peter Névraumont to tell this anti-history of the world, in which Michelangelo fakes a masterpiece; Arctic explorers seek an entrance into a hollow Earth; a Shakespeare tragedy is “rediscovered”; a financial scheme inspires Charles Ponzi; a spirit photographer snaps Abraham Lincoln’s ghost; people can survive ingesting only air and sunshine; Edgar Allen Poe is the forefather of fake news; and the first human was not only British but played cricket.”

The Girls in the Picture by Melanie Benjamin arrived via Library Thing

“From the New York Times bestselling author of The Swans of Fifth Avenue and The Aviator’s Wife, a fascinating novel of the friendship and creative partnership between two of Hollywood’s earliest female legends—screenwriter Frances Marion and superstar Mary Pickford.”

That rounds up this week’s mailbox and my updates. My husband surprised me with pink roses and my favorite wine and chocolate truffles on Friday. I’ll close with pics. Enjoy your week, what are you reading? Watching?

  1. I love your post title…and the lovely things you shared, from the memoir to the roses. Gorgeous scarf you crocheted while watching a show…I mostly snack while watching. I think that crocheting is a better choice!

I am determined to read something by Philippa Gregory someday.

Enjoy your new books and your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.

    • Thank you Laurel, crocheting while binge watching shows is one of my favorite pastimes 🙂 I totally recommend Philippa Gregory, she is very good. Enjoy your week too!

  2. Hello. Thank you for your recent admiration of my green Flax sweater WIP. I love the looks of your crochet in that last photo. I can only hook basic crochet and haven’t tried colorwork. You had a good week of reading. You do the best you can especially with a day job. Reading should be fun, not a task to take care of. Have a good Sunday.

  3. I am also a slow reader. I have only completed one book in January. I should get another done this week.

Hoax sounds particularly interesting. I know of a few historical hoaxes. Some of them are amazing stories.

  4. Naida, I adore your handmade Infinity scarf. The B& W pattern is truly amazing!

The roses and truffles are lovely. 🙂

Your reading is a lot like mine: quality vs. quantity. I’m enjoying my reading this month, savoring my time spent with my books.

    Have a great week ahead!

  5. Fitting in reading can be tough when you work full-time and have other things going on, I know. I am surprised I’ve managed to read as much as I have so far this month. You are doing great, Naida! The Girls in the Picture looks really good! Hoax sounds like it will be a fascinating read. Such beautiful roses! What a nice husband you have! I hope you have a great week!

    • Wasn’t it so good? And yes, she was on a mission for real! She got on my nerves a little bit though. I googled her, she started two colleges apparently! She was Henry VIIIs grandmother. Enjoy your week!

  7. It has been a cold January. I’m pretty much over it, ready for spring as well!

I started The White Queen and thought it was quite good. I need to get back to it before I forget what was going on. 🙂

  8. Your scarf looks great 🙂 I totally fail at anything crafty but I’m trying to teach myself knitting (although it’s too warm to even contemplate it at the moment, I think it’s a winter thing haha)

That’s lovely of your husband, the roses are pretty.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

  10. What a lovely gift from your husband! So fun to read about your crocheting projects and that infinity scarf is awesome! I didn’t realize the White Queen was based on Philippa Gregory’s books. Might have to check that out. Hope you have a great week!

  11. What a lovely surprise from your husband! A great way to start the weekend. I love the scarf and I really want to read (and now watch) White Queen. I’m fascinated by that time period. Your crochet projects are amazing. That’s one thing I really want to learn how to do. Have a great week!

  12. Hi Naida,

I have only read the very early Philippa Gregory series ‘Wideacre’, written back in the late 1980s

    https://www.fantasticfiction.com/g/philippa-gregory/

I am not quite so keen on the brand of historical fiction she writes so prolifically now, although I realise that I am in the minority, as most readers love both the books and the television adaptations.

I like the sound of your new crochet book, although I wonder just how much some of these craftspeople can teach you that is new, as you already seem so accomplished with all the projects you have completed and shown us.

You have a very thoughtful husband there as well. Mine does act spontaneously on occasion, but I guess that after almost 39 years, he might have gotten a little complacent. He is very kind in so many other ways though, so no complaints 🙂

Enjoy the rest of your week and Happy Reading

    • Hi Yvonne, I’ve heard of the Wideacre ones and they sound good. I’ve read several of her Tudor books and enjoyed them a lot.

Thank you, I like the pattern books, I always enjoy finding and trying new patterns.

      Wow! 39 years! That’s wonderful 🙂
      Enjoy your week too.

  15. What a nice surprise from your husband! That’s awesome 🙂 The roses are absolutely gorgeous!

I love your infinity scarf, too. I am not too good at any crafting – maybe one day 😉

Your new books look good, and look at you reaching your January reading goal.

Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.
