Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 3/4/18: Books, Crochet and Random Updates

sunday (249x249)mm

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….

Happy Sunday and Happy March everyone. I sound like a broken record, but what a hectic week. More late nights at the office have had me mentally exhausted and it will continue through the end of March. Plus we had more snow, icy rain and strong winds to start this weekend off with. We are expecting more snow this week again. The good thing is, it warms up soon after so the snow melts faster. I officially need to be on a tropical island sipping a Piña Colada while wearing a bathing suit and a sarong and reading a good book while I’m laid out on a comfy beach chair under a palm tree facing the beautiful blue ocean with my crochet project at my side as well. Can that detailed scenario happen soon please?

Anyway, onto my mailbox:

I received an ARC of Close to Home by Cara Hunter via First To Read. It sounds intense.

“They know who did it. Perhaps not consciously. Perhaps not yet. But they know.

When eight-year-old Daisy Mason vanishes from her family’s Oxford home during a costume party, Detective Inspector Adam Fawley knows that nine times out of ten, the offender is someone close to home. And Daisy’s family is certainly strange—her mother is obsessed with keeping up appearances, while her father is cold and defensive under questioning. And then there’s Daisy’s little brother, so withdrawn and uncommunicative . . “

Thirsty: An Eastside Brewery Novel by Mia Hopkins is my next read. I have a feeling I will breeze right through this one. The author followed me on Twitter this week, I love when that happens.

Coming up this week:

I finished reading Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase this morning and I will be sharing my thoughts on this one soon. I loved it! Historical romance at its best.

I signed up for the Take Control of Your TBR Pile Challenge March 2018 for this month and hope to read at least 2 books that have been sitting on Mount TBR for way too long.

Watched:
The Walking Dead came back last week and I cried a little. I just love Rick’s character and the twists and turns his story has taken. Andrew Lincoln is a great actor for this role. And as much as I like Negan, he’s a great baddie, he needs to go. Speaking of Lincoln, I finally watched the film Lincoln. It is based on my favorite president, I don’t know what took me so long to watch this one. Daniel Day-Lewis is amazing in it.

Crocheting:

I finished up this pooled cowl recently, Yvonne was asking to see this one. I have a slight obsession with color pooling.

I’ve been making so many things lately and using up my yarn because my goal is to re-open my Etsy shop this year. I want to get a good amount of inventory going first and it does take time. The blankets I make and show here on my blog are for home or friends and family, so on my shop they will be listed as “made to order” items. This way I don’t have a bunch of blankets worked up with no place to go if they don’t sell plus they take the longest time to make. I also want to make a few infinity scarves and shawls. I haven’t started any toy inventory yet, I’m thinking small bears and things like that. My new shop name is going to be Crochet NJ inspired by the Garden State since I’m a Jersey girl 🙂

I am also still working on my neon stripes blanket and am almost finished. I have loved working on this project, the bright colors just make me happy. I will share the finished pic in a few weeks.

Also, Otis is at the groomer’s right now so expect a freshly groomed Otis pic next Sunday. Enjoy your week! Thanks for stopping in. Let me know what you are doing, reading, crafting or watching this week. xo

  1. Your color pooling work is amazing! I’m in awe. How do you figure out how to get it to pool in just the right places to create a pattern like that?

I know a lot of people are really ready for spring. I don’t want more winter, but at the same time, I don’t feel like we got enough. Well, not enough snow, anyway. January’s temperatures were pretty bitter.

Best of luck on Take Control of Your TBR Pile! I’m doing that one, too.

    Have a wonderful March!

    • Thank you. You have to start crocheting at a certain point where the color changes then match up the stitches accordingly. There’s alot of help on YouTube and at the link I shared on my post.
Have fun with the Take Control of Your TBR Pile challenge too!
      Happy reading and stay warm.

  2. I hope you are finding some calm time amongst all the busy. I know it can be hard. I’m hoping for some light at work with the new supervisor starting mid-month, but since he’ll be training, it will probably be awhile before that truly happens. Any relief, however small, will be welcome. I don’t think I can keep going at this pace! I wish we all could be relaxing on a tropical island right now. 🙂 Close to Home does sound intense! I hope you enjoy it. I am all caught up in the Walking Dead for the time being. It was a good episode. I cried a bit too. I hope you have a great week! We were supposed to have a booth sale today, but Maggie is running a fever. Luckily another girl was able to step in for her. So, I’m on nurse duty today.

    • Thank you Wendy. I hope work eases up for you too. I can relate! Yes, TWD has been good, as much as I like Negan, I think his time is up.
I hope the little one feels better! Take care!

  3. I need to catch up on the Walking Dead, I’m still somewhere before the midseason break I think. I’ve got a few to watch…

Close To Home sounds like such a chilling read!

  4. I have also had a hectic time at work with a few more tough weeks to go,

Close to Home sounds interesting. Good characters can add so much to a mystery. These sound very intriguing.

  5. There are now two books in the DI Adam Fawley series and they are both heading for my ‘Want To Read’ list. Cara Hunter is a new to me author, so thanks for the introduction and I hope that you enjoy the read as much as all the others who have helped the book achieve such amazing ratings!

I love the new crochet project and I am in total awe of the colour pooling technique you are so good at. I know that my expertise would never stretch that far.

I didn’t know that you had ventured into the ETSY marketplace before, can I ask what made you decide to pull out and then give it another go? I can’t believe you never got any orders for the beautiful pieces you create, although I do wonder how you are going to fit everything in with your reading, blogging and obviously very challenging day job – not to mention that very hectic family life you have 🙂 🙂

Have a great week and try not to get too stressed with work, make sure you get some ‘me’ time 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne, the Cara Hunter book sounds so good right?
As far as the crochet, I am hooked on color pooling. Anytime I see variegated yarn, I wonder if I can pool it. That and the afghan crochet technique also. I like the challenge.

I used to sell on ETSY when they first opened, long ago, I’d say that was back in 2006 maybe. I got tired because with the kids being younger, and work and everything else, I just couldn’t keep it up. It was fun though while it lasted. I’d get custom orders and be up some late nights trying to finish them up. If I didn’t have a full time job already it would have been fine, but it was too much for me. My patterns sold the most so I am trying to get that going again when I re-open. Now buyers can just easily download the patterns from the sellers once they pay, it used to be that I’d have to get home, personally email the patterns out etc. Now it’s much easier so that’s great too. Plus I can just re-list items from my phone using the app now too. None of that was available back then. And I will just take it slowly now, with getting inventory up. I love to settle in and crochet in the evenings, so if I can little by little get things going for the shop that will be nice. I’m taking my time with it.

Thank you and have a nice week too, happy reading. We have more snow coming Wednesday so I am hoping for a snow day 🙂

  6. Happy Sunday, Naida! The color pooling is beauty-full! I love your work and can’t wait to revisit your Etsy shop. It has been cooler than usual here, and we even had some rain (a big deal for us). Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  7. Your scarf and your blanket look so beautiful! I’m more of a knitter myself but I also like to crochet from time to time.
Close to home sounds good, I hadn’t heard of it before but it looks like my kind of book. Wishing you a great week and happy reading!

  9. So glad you are re-opening your Etsy store! Please let us know when you do. Your creations are lovely! I know what you mean about working on inventory to stock the store. It does take time. I heard on the Etsy forums someone mentioning that the more items you have, the more views you have. They recommended having 100+ items. I about fell laughing. I wish! 🙂 Anyway, hope work isn’t too draining this week!

    • Thanks Iliana, yes, I was looking online as well, mainly on Pinterest for shop tips and they do recommend having a full shop. I know you know how time consuming that can be! Buyers like to have options. Enjoy your week!

  10. I hope the workload lightens soon. I know how tiring that can be. I haven’t blogged that much this year for that reason. I love that cowl! You make some fantastic pieces.
