National Poetry Month: Anne Sexton

April is National Poetry Month. I enjoy reading poetry, the beauty and rhythm of the words, the way a poem can evoke feelings in the reader. I find that reading poetry is a form of catharsis.

Today I will share a snippet of one of my favorite poets, the phenomenal and intense Anne Sexton.

And we are magic talking to itself,
noisy and alone. I am queen of all my sins
forgotten. Am I still lost?
Once I was beautiful. Now I am myself,
counting this row and that row of moccasins

  2. Oh that’s beautiful. I have not read too many poems by Anne Sexton but maybe I’ll be able to check out some of her poetry this month. Happy National Poetry Month!

  6. I don’t think I’ve read Anne Sexton yet. What you posted here is beautiful.

    It’s hard to choose a favorite poet. Recently I read some of Adrienne Rich’s work – melancholy and beautiful. “For the Dead,” “From a Survivor,” and “The Trees” are recommendations.

    • I like her, I’ve read a several of her poems and while some are delicate, others are edgy and angry. I looked up Adrienne Rich, thank you for sharing her name here.

      I read For the Dead and found it moving, I like “The waste of my love goes on this way… trying to save you from yourself…” It reminds me of the way a parent advises their child, who may not be listening.

  7. I have a problem with poetry in so much as I like it read TO me rather than BY me. Still, a writer I know is highly regarded, your choice of Anne Sexton is perfect for National Poetry Month.

  8. For someone who hates being read to, I do have to agree with what Tracy just wrote about poetry.

    I find that if I close my eyes when poetry is being read, somehow the meaning of the words becomes much clearer.

    I read the complete ‘From You, Doctor Martin’ poem and found it really sad and moving. Although once I then checked out Anne’s profile page, I could see exactly why that might be.

    Thanks for sharing, Anne is one poet whose work I should like to read more of 🙂

    • I agree, hearing it aloud makes a difference. Yes, I read about her life online as well. I also read her daughters auto-biography many years ago when I received a review copy and it was really sad.

  13. I have only just recently started reading poetry. And in the process, j have read a few of Anne Sexton’s poems and I absolutely loved them!! Thank you for sharing! I loved this post.
