Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 4/15/18: Books, Crochet etc.

sunday (249x249)mm

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….

Happy Sunday everyone. The weeks are flying right on by and we are already halfway through April.

Yesterday the temps went up into the 80’s here and it was so nice to feel the warmth. We took our usual drive out to the nearby state park yesterday afternoon and sat out by the picnic benches near the creek for a little while then got ice-cream on the way home. I brought my crochet project along with me. It is quiet and peaceful there, perfect for reading or just sitting and talking. There is also a path to walk along and enjoy.

This is actually a star-shaped blanket I’m crocheting for my favorite aunt.  We were always close and although she moved to Florida we still keep in touch regularly. She’s been asking me if I could make her something for a while now and I never seem to get around to it. She was vague when I recently asked what she would like, saying “something for my bedroom”. So after thinking about it, I figured a blanket would be a nice gift. Her favorite color is pink. She doesn’t know what I am making, and I won’t be there to see her reaction when she sees her gift as I’ll be mailing it out to her but I hope she will like it. It’s very “her” if you know what I mean. She likes flowers so I started with a flower in the center and am continuing with the star shape for the rest in alternating colors.

My reading lagged this week since I was not feeling 100% and when I am sick I can’t focus on reading. I mainly watch tv instead. I’m still in the middle of In Places Hidden (Golden Gate Secrets) by Tracie Peterson and hopefully I can finish that one up soon.

I actually had to make a quick trip to the allergist before work mid-week as I woke up to one of my mystery skin reactions again on my face and neck. My face was feeling weird last Sunday and the tell-tale signs were there with the itchiness, but I was hoping it was just the pollen in the air doing it. It has happened before and is a real nuisance with the mild swelling on my face and the annoying rash that feels kind of like a prickly sunburn, but I am feeling better now. I spent three days at work with my face and neck smeared with Vaseline and the allergy cream he prescribed, so not looking my best there lol. I got a few strange looks. The allergy cream is strong so it causes more redness and makes you feel like your skin is on fire but it eventually works after about two days. That’s why I dilute it with Vaseline.

gifmess

My allergist still recommends I get the skin patch test so we can figure out why it happens, but it is a 3 day process and I haven’t yet made the time for it. They put patches of possible skin allergens all on your back and you have to go to the allergist each day so they can gauge any reactions, but you can’t shower for the 3 days. And they don’t do it on weekends so it has to be weekdays and how inconvenient because there is no way I’m going to work without showering for 3 days straight. Hence, I haven’t done the patch testing yet.

Anyway onto my mailbox….

The Pisces by Melissa Broder and Lone Rider (Wind River) by Lindsay McKenna both arrived via AmazonVine. They look so good I couldn’t resist.

This past week on the blog:
anne
I shared a snippet of Anne Sexton’s poetry in honor of National Poetry Month.

Coming up this week:
I have another poem set to post mid-week and hopefully I will finish and review In Places Hidden.

That about wraps it up for now. I’ll close with a picture of dessert. We went with friends to one of my favorite BBQ places on Friday night. For a minute there I was scared I’d have to cancel with not feeling so great, but by Friday I was feeling better so it was a nice way to end the week. I trekked out there with my shiny Vaseline face and enjoyed the evening. I always get the fried BBQ chicken with mashed potatoes and they have the best chocolate soufflé for dessert. They bake it there and bring it out warm in a little baking dish and top it with whipped cream and pecans. I found a recipe for it online and I want to try making it myself.

  1. Oh, I empathize about allergies! I used to only have the kind from inhaling the air…but now I seem to be getting more of the skin reactions. It started with the hair dye allergy…and now I think it’s everything I touch. My daughter directed me to the fragrance free detergents for clothes, towels, etc., so we’ll see how that works.

That chocolate souffle looks so yummy!

Enjoy those books…and thanks for visiting my blog.

    • Thank you, I am better now with the skin stuff but seasonal allergies are here forever. It can get annoying. I use fragrance free stuff too, hopefully it helps you, I think it does help.
Enjoy your week! Sorry I’m late in replying to my comments this time around.

  2. I’ve done the traditional back testing with the little pricks they do on your skin. I’ve actually been to two different allergists who came up with 2 very different results. I hope you are able to figure out what is causing the reaction. I once had a rash all over my body from a medication I had taken and it was so embarrassing to walk around looking all blotchy. Especially since I had a bake sale I had to attend. 😦 No one wanted cookies from a chick covered in a skin rash. LoL

    • Hi lady, ugh I know, I did the local testing too a few years ago, on my forearm with the pinpricks, but all they said was I am allergic to cats and dust, which duh, I knew that already lol.
I know, walking around all blotchy looking isn’t fun at all. Enjoy your week!

  3. That dessert looks amazing, I do love a good souffle. One of our favourite French restaurants in Florida, used to bring it out to the table freshly baked, cut it open in front of you and pour in the hot chocolate sauce 🙂

My nieces regularly post pictures of their latest dessert conquest, as there is a place in Swindon called ‘Kaspas’, which is solely a dessert restaurant – Heaven!! 🙂

At the moment, I have a full on spring cold, but at this time of year the tree allergies kick in, so out come the antihistamine tablets. Luckily my suffering generall ends when all the blossom and tree sap have gone, the grass and I get along just fine!

Reading generally takes a back set for me as well, when I am not feeling too good, but I also tend to lose interest in the TV and jus want to sleep it off. I just haven’t been able to get stuck into a book for a couple of weeks now, as we have quite a lot of family stuff going on.

I love the blanket and wish you and I lived a little closer, as I would have my orders in 🙂 The flower sets the centre of amazingly and I love the star shape. Truly something personal and unique for her to treasure.

    Have a great week 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne, good luck with the PC stuff, I need a laptop myself. That way I can blog in bed.
The restaurant in Fl and Kaspas you mention sound wonderful. Nothing like freshly baked anything.
I hope your allergies get better too, I get seasonal ones too with the pollen especially.
Thank you for your comments and enjoy your week! I’m still working on the star blanket, it is coming along pretty quickly.

    • Thank you and yes, it’s only the back that can’t get wet. I am going to do it though, I think it’ll be worth at least knowing the source of the skin allergies since it’s happened to me several times throughout the years.
      Enjoy your weekend!

  4. Sorry to hear that you were not feeling well. Maybe you will eventually feel better without that three day test.

I also ate barbecue this weekend, it was last night. That desert looks so good.

    Have a great week!

  5. Naida,
That is the cutest star-shaped blanket! What a wonderful talent to have!
I’m glad you’re feeling better. I hope that you have a good week ahead, without any allergy symptoms. 🙂

  6. Yeah…the sudden change of temps does not help when it comes to allergies. I hope you feel better soon. I felt a little under the weather too and I felt like doing nothing but reading, which I did. Good thing I was reading a good book. That helped to keep me distracted. Your new books look good. Have a great week!

  7. Oh, those allergies sound annoying. I hope you figure out a way to do those tests soon.

It was in the 80s here yesterday and tomorrow will be in the 50s. I can’t figure out why people like spring so much.

I’m sure you aunt will love her blanket!

  8. Ooh nice that the weather has gotten warm! They just called school off here for ice (seriously)- we had sleet all last night and it’s been icy here all day. I’m glad it’s warm somewhere ha ha!

Have a great week! That’s an amazing looking dessert!!

  9. How nice that you live near a state park. I’m sorry you had such a bad allergen reaction. I find it interesting how allergists in your area do a patch test. Here it’s pricking of the skin with needles. My daughter went through it twice, once as a toddler and another a few years ago. The second time she had over 60 prick marks on her back. She is allergic to grasses and trees and lightly to peanuts and lima beans. We were totally baffled about the last item.

    • Yes, it is nice to live near the state park, and we are near a botanical garden as well, which is really nice especially when we want to take an afternoon drive. It’s very peaceful there plus there are hiking trails and areas to sit and just relax.
I had that local skin test done as well a few years back but all they told me was I am allergic to cats and dust, which I already knew. That’s good you found out what your daughter is allergic to. Lima beans, interesting!

My daughter had a shellfish reaction years ago, and we had no idea she was allergic until that horrifying experience when she ate shrimp when she was 8 years old and we took her to the ER.
Then after blood tests came back, she’s allergic to any shellfish plus cockroaches. How random. So I told her NEVER go on on of those reality tv shows where one of the challenges is to eat roaches lol.

Your star project looks wonderful. How nice for your Aunt.

  11. Oh no, that allergic reaction you are having doesn’t sound good at all. I am glad that at least the medication is working. Hopefully you’ll be able to schedule the test for another time but that does sound like a pain! I deal with eczema sometimes and it’s so annoying. Your aunt is going to love the blanket – it’s gorgeous!

  12. Your crochet colors are lovely 🙂 and I know those feels so well! I have mystical face allergies as well. You kind of start thinking, why can’t it be anywhere else but the face, the only thing people always see xD
    The dessert looks amazing :O
