Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday June 24 2018: I love the Summer

sunday (249x249)mm

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….

Good morning everyone. It is the last Sunday in June, when did that happen? I haven’t been around blog land too much this month, just the usual every day things keeping me busy. I love the summer months and tend to put dinner on the stove once I get home from work then I take my book or crochet out back and stay there for a little while. The warm weather beckons, especially after being stuck inside an office crunching numbers and working on files all day.

My donut floatie looks like it is levitating in this shot of our pool.

Also, I’ve been trying to get caught up on yearly doctor’s visits lately and it’s like pulling teeth trying to make appointments that aren’t months away and that fit our schedules. I couldn’t get an eye exam appointment until early September. My daughter and I got our dental cleanings done last Saturday so that was good at least. One visit checked off.

Onto bookish things….

In my Mailbox:

Eight Goodbyes arrived via Meryl Moss Media. How nice is this cover? And this blurb *insert emoji heart eyes here*. I’m reading this one now and it was good from page one, plus the heroine is a writer and I like books about books and authors. I’ve set aside Needful Things once again to fit a review book in, but I will get back to it after this one.

One universe, nine planets, 204 countries, 809 islands and 7 seas, and I had the privilege of meeting you.”

When Tessa Talman meets Simon Fremont for the first time, not only is she attracted to him, she’s intrigued by how different their lives are. He’s a dedicated scientist, practical, pragmatic, and grounded—while she’s a head-in-the-clouds romance author. As their relationship grows, they agree to meet in places around the world, while continuing to live on opposite sides of the globe….

Also in the mail is The Haunting of Mount Cod: A Laura Boxford Mystery via Authoright. Another great cover and that little Pug 🙂

Lady Laura Boxford lives with her pug, Parker, in the retirement complex of Wellworth Lawns, formerly her family home.

One day she and her friend Venetia see the ancient actor Sir Repton Willowby arriving. He’s Venetia’s cousin by marriage and Venetia says he murdered his wife.

He lives at the Edwardian pile, Mount Cod and he says he’s being haunted by the ghost of an eighteenth century serving wench called Rosalind.

Laura is convinced he’s a charlatan using the ghost as a ruse for finding a new wife…

Watching:

My daughter and I went to see Hereditary last week. I found it slow going, but tense and scary. Also, really sad and shocking. There are themes of mental illness and grief in the story-line. I wouldn’t call it a favorite horror film and I found it wasn’t as scary as all the hype, but it was worth the watch. I think I read somewhere that it was this generation’s “Exorcist”, no, it is not.

Also, I can’t remember if I mentioned it here or not but we rented Insidious The Last Key recently also and it disappointed. The Insidious films are some of my favorite horror movies and this was a let down. It wasn’t scary and just seemed unnecessary.

That covers my updates for now. I hope you are having a good summer and reading great books. What have you been up to? I’m doing my blog hopping this morning to catch up a little bit.

Enjoy your week!

  1. I also love the warmer weather now. It is still early summer but it is going by too fast.

I will point my wife in the direction of The Laura Boxford mysteries. I think that she would like them. The pug looks and sounds cool!

  2. My brother is very much into his horror films and after listening to a few reviews, I had recommended he look out for ‘Hereditary’. After what you say though and trusting your judgment as I do, I think I had better warn him that it may not be as ‘hardcore’ as I had led him to believe. On the other hand, ‘Insidious’ does sound right up his street, so I’ll definitely mention this one to him.

I know what you mean about fitting in doctor’s appointments. The average wait for a standard, no more than ten minute appointment, is now about 5-6 weeks, so it is probably best that I plan to be sick well in advance!

The non NHS dentist is almost as bad, despite the heafty charges we pay and I always have advance bookings for dental check ups and hygienist appointments, at least 2 years in advance!!

What a crazy world we live in 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne, I love horror films too. Something about seeing it in a theater makes it extra fun.
Ugh the doctors visits are such a pain!
2 years in advance for dentist is insane!
Enjoy your week and happy reading 🙂

  3. I love the look of your backyard, which would be calling to me, too.

Enjoy your reading and outdoor activities…and thanks for sharing your books. I saw a mention of Hereditary on another blog. It looks pretty intense.

Thanks for visiting my blog, and have a great week.

  4. Oh that pool looks inviting! Although the last few days have been kinda cool here, not good swimming weather? Not sure what’s going on with THAT lol. Love the levitating floatie. 🙂

I’ve noticed too that it takes a lot longer to get appts and stuff now.

    Have a great week!

  5. I’m loving the warmer weather too, especially now that we’re finally getting some sunshine here to go with it. Reading and crocheting outside sounds so relaxing too.

Making doctor’s appointments is the worst. I find it nearly impossible to get one scheduled that is actually convenient.

    • I love to read outside, for some reason it’s just nice to be out there when the weather allows it.
I know, the doctors appointments are a necessary headache.
      Enjoy your week!

  6. You’re so lucky to have a pool. I wish we had one sometimes. I love your donut floatie. Yeah, appointments have been starting off our summer and I feel like I’ve been running around.

    • The pool is definitely nice and i give my husband full credit. He keeps it maintained. All the doctors visits can be a pain but necessary. I hope you enjoy your week and get some relax time in too 🙂 Happy reading and crafting!

  7. Wishing you a good summer with lots of pool and reading and not so much with the doctor visits. I fit in too many last week and am happy to have a week with only two checkups. We actually have 4 during the 4th of July week. I can’t imagine how that happened; I thought the doctors would take the week off!! Anne – Books of My Heart

    • Thank you, I hope you have a great summer too.
4 visits in one week is alot but at least it will be over and done with. Enjoy your week! Do you have a blog link?

  8. Happy Sunday, Naida! That donut floatie is too cute! Your crochet work is wonderful, as usual. It can be stressful trying to arrange all the medical appointments for a family. Have a great week ahead!

  9. I love summer! Our pool’s not quite ready for swimming yet though. We had to buy a new filter and are still working on getting the water clear.

    Enjoy your books!

  10. I’m enjoying the summer too by cycling and spending more time outdoors, so not reading as much, but I have read some great books this month. I like the sound of Eight Goodbyes. I’m not into horror so none of the two trailers beckoned. I hope you keep that relaxed routine you got going. Enjoy your pool!

  11. We’re still having unusual weather…days of cold and rain (good for the garden) but then blistering hot and humid days (which feel like true summer here). Happy reading

    • Enjoy your weekend and happy reading too 🙂 We had a rainy day here this week, but it was still hot and the thunder was so loud that night it woke us.
