Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 8/12/18: Enjoying the Summertime and Reading Good Books

IMG_1131

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….

Hello everyone. I haven’t done an updates/mailbox post in a few weeks. I’ve been enjoying my summer, I hope you have been as well. I went away on vacation, came back and stood on vacation mode for a few weeks after that. I took the pic above by the lake on vacation, it was so peaceful and I enjoyed the view very much.

We’ve had a rainy couple of weeks here with flash flooding yesterday and I’m hoping the rain lets up. With all the rain yesterday I didn’t go out to run my usual Saturday errands but I finished reading my book so that was good.

I also enjoyed doing this on vacation last month, crochet. There is something to be said for not having any set schedule, sleeping in, staying up late, taking an afternoon nap and soaking in the sun every day.

On the blog: I read and reviewed since July (I’ve been on a thriller kick lately).

Along Came A Spider by James Patterson (I raved about how the author re-tweeted)

Kiss the Girls (Alex Cross 2) by James Patterson
The Body in the Ballroom by R.J. Koreto
and Sister of Mine: A Novel (review to come this week).

In my mailbox these few weeks:

There is a library in town that I like to visit while away on vacay and I found these used books there on sale. Have you read any of these? I was happy to find Mary Balogh, Karin Slaughter and James Patterson hardcovers. I couldn’t resist.

Royal Seduction by Jennifer Blake
The Secret Mistress by Mary Balogh
Sundays at Tiffany’s by James Patterson
The Kept Woman by Karin Slaughter

I love this trade paperback/ harlequin romance by Jennifer Blake circa 1983, it’s in great condition. I had to have it for my book stash. I plan on reading it.

Also in my mailbox, An Everyday Thing came via Poetic Book Tours for an August post.

sister
Sister of Mine arrived from Meryl Moss Media. I read it already so my thoughts will be up soon.

Coming soon on the blog for August:
Reviews of The Haunting of Mount Cod: A Laura Boxford Mystery, Sister of Mine and An Everyday Thing.

1blustar**Also of note, I’ve been visiting a few of your blogs this week and leaving comments, but my comments aren’t showing up. I know some of you approve your comments before they are allowed but I haven’t gotten any messages telling me my comment will be approved by the blog moderator. I wonder if I’m going directly to spam? It’s happened more than once. Any thoughts? **1blustar

I’ll close with a few more vacation pics. I’m going to split them up with this week’s updates and next week’s too. I hope you are enjoying your weekend. What have you been up to? How is your summer going?

I mostly only drink beer in the summer time and it’s always Landshark. I’ve come to associate it with lazy summer days.

Chatting by the fire-pit at night was always a nice way to end our days.

One of our cabin bedroom windows had this cozy picture-like view of the stairs/wooded path behind us.

Early mornings reading in bed while everyone was still asleep was great. James Patterson was a good vacation book pick because it was a fast paced thriller that held my interest.

As the sun was setting I’d sit on the dock and enjoy the view….IMG_9145 (700x467)

and as it was rising it was very peaceful and serene….IMG_9448 (745x497)

That covers my weekly updates. I wish I was still on vacation! Thanks for stopping in and enjoy your week 🙂

  1. I love those lake photos, and that cabin looks like my favorite kind of vacation place! Thanks for sharing, and enjoy the upcoming week. Thanks for visiting my blog.

I enjoyed Sister of Mine and The Kept Woman, and I’m looking forward to Slaughter’s newest one soon. I read Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls a while ago, and enjoyed the movies, too.

    • Thank you and yes, I had a great vacation.
I’ll be posting my thoughts on Sister of Mine very soon. It was a good one!

  2. Looks like a FABULOUS vacation! We haven’t done anything here. By the time I got out of school – it’s time to prepare my kids to go back. I have a two more years of no vacations. I hope you have a wonderful week and great library finds – no I haven’t read them.

  3. Your last few comments have gone to spam and I have needed to retrieve them, but I have definitely responded to them all and made reciprocal visits here and left comments. Today’s comment (Sunday 12th August), went into my ‘please moderate’ box and I needed to approve it, but as per, I did respond to your comment. All very strange!!

Our heatwave weather conditions have broken too and we have had quite a lot of rain here, although there are parts of the country which have seen much more serious flash flooding, so I consider us to have been lucky.

Our local library holds quite a few book sales and generally tries to display their sale stock outside on portable shelf units. Not a problem in itself, however I have to walk past the library to get back to my car park at the end of the day and I have to resist the temptation to stop and take a look at what is on offer. As I have spent my entire day working on donated book stock into the charity shop and can have first pick of any I want to buy, ex-library books should be the last thing on my mind……!

Love the holiday snaps, particularly the sunrise and sunset, my favourite picture compositions. I hope that you manage to solve your posting / commenting glitches and have a great week 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne, thank you for letting me know about the comments going to spam. I had a sneaking suspicion that’s been happening. Strange.

We have had flash flooding here too and had to cancel our dinner plans last Saturday night. It is rainy again today and I’m hoping it clears up because we are planning to go to an outdoor bbq/live music festival with family later today.
I’d be tempted to go to the library too lol. I hope you find some good ones, especially since you get first pick.
Have a great weekend 🙂 I hope the rain clears up by you too.

  4. I also have been enjoying the summer. Though I was out for much of today we had on and off torrential showers.

I also have been having trouble leaving comments on some filks blogs. I think that it may be the new European privacy requirements may be screwing a lot things up. If you ever have a problem at my site please just let me know. You can always shoot me a message through Twitter.

As you know I am always trying a new beer 🙂

    Happy reading

    • HI Brian, so much rain lately. And thank you, I don’t think blogger has given me commenting issues, it seems it’s WordPress.

Enjoy your weekend and any new beers you sample. 🙂

  5. What lovely vacation pictures. They make me want some vacation time.
Your book finds are great – all authors who deliver a good story.
I hope your comments do come through. Others have mentioned having problems the last few weeks.
    Happy Reading!

  6. Cute pic with the duck. 🙂 Glad you had a nice vacay. I love vacation mode and wish it was year round. If I had my way I would stay up late and sleep in every day! And a fire pit is always a good way to end the day. 🙂

I’ve had the same problem, mostly with WordPress blogs- my comments just don’t show up. If it’s a blogger I know well sometimes I let em know on Twitter, in case they have a bunch of comments sitting in spam…

Oh I haven’t had Landshark in ages lol.

    • Vacay was wonderful, I wish it was year round 🙂
Yes, it looks like it’s wordpress having commenting issues, thanks for your input.

I love Landshark in the summer 🙂 Happy weekend!

  7. I’m so jelly I need some peanut butter! 😉 Oh I love the look of your vacay! I also love the crochet. I do bad crochet but it is nice to have something to just create when you don’t have a lot of space. I still think it is cool that Patterson retweeted you. Have a great week!

  8. Beautiful post! This looks like a gorgeous place to stay, in a cabin by a peaceful lake. I’ve never tried Landshark–it sounds like the perfect brew for the summer. Your crochet work is dazzling. I look forward to your review of Sister of Mine. As I mentioned on Instagram, I took a short blogging break. Have a great week, Naida!

  9. Naida, I found some comments from you (and others) awaiting moderation, so I published them. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I used to get emails about this, but now I am not notified (I may need to take a look at my settings). 🙂

  10. Love reading on vacation and finding books on vacation in other places. Looks enjoyable. I’ll have to check the disqus thing to see if your comments are stuck. I heard blogger was having issues with accepting comments recently
