Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….
Hello everyone. Happy Sunday Happy November. Happy reading.
I am sending my thoughts and prayers to the people in California with the major fires burning there now. It is so scary to see the news.
I went MIA for a little bit on blog land recently, because I was in Puerto Rico on vacation for one week. See the palm trees above? Yep. This past week was my first week back home and I am still kind of on vacation mode. Going to beautiful, sunny Puerto Rico was amazing. It is funny how I got used to the warm sunny temps (high 80’s) and going to the beach in October, meanwhile back home we had cold Fall temps and shorter days. We spent the days by the pool and the beach as well as sightseeing. We also visited some family.
I have alot of family on the island since both my parents were born there and the majority of my extended family still lives there. The island is still recovering from the devastation of the last hurricane a year ago. Hearing some of my family members stories and seeing the damage they still have to their homes was tough. But it was wonderful seeing them again, I hadn’t been to the island in about 8 years.
My hot-dog legs by the resort pool are below….we had snow flurries yesterday morning by me. I miss having my rum punch right a this spot.
Onto my mailbox…
While I was on vacation I purchased a copy of Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn and I read it already. I loved it. My review will be up this week I hope but I am behind on reviews. I gobbled that book up and wanted more so I bought a copy of Dark Places by the same author when I got home and I am reading that one now. Perfect for the 3 day weekend. This is a new favorite author.
Recently on the blog:
My thoughts on The Vampire Knitting Club by Nancy Warren went up this past week as well as an interview with the author. This book is the start of a cozy paranormal mystery series revolving around knitting vampires and witches. It was a fun read and I really enjoyed it.
I also listed a few of my favorite scary books before I left for vacation.
Crochet:
A very cool thing happened, well at least I think it’s very cool. I follow RedHeart Yarns on Instagram and whenever I post pics of my crochet projects using their yarn, I tag them. A few times they will “like” my post. A few weeks ago they asked me if I would give permission for them to use one of my crochet pictures on their Instagram and website, and I said YES. Yesterday they posted my crochet picture on their Instagram, which was really cool. I am the first one on the left, the pink scarf I made using their ombre yarn.
That wraps up my updates for now. How are you doing? What are you reading? Watching? I’ve been catching up on blog-land this weekend little by little.
I will close with a few more vacation photos in case anyone wants to see. Enjoy your weekend and Happy Veteran’s Day.
Puerto Rico from the airplane…
One lazy afternoon at the beach….
In Old San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico….a view from Castillo San Felipe del Morro.
One side of the fort/castle. We went inside the fort and down below as well…to the dungeons where prisoners were held in the past. It was very hot and claustrophobic down there. The cells had just one small hole in the wall with bars on it and you could see the ocean from there.
Another view of El Morro….
This below might be my favorite photo I took in Old San Juan. Read here to see what these umbrellas represent.

Enjoy your week, and here we are in California, worried about friends and loved ones caught in the wildfires.
Just as you must have been during the hurricanes in Puerto Rico. Such disasters do remind us to stay connected to loved ones.
Thanks for visiting my blog.

It looks like you had a great trip. I love exploring old forts and castles. El Morro looks impressive.
I am on Long Island and it feels cold here too. However, winter is coming and it will be getting a lot colder.

Hi Brian, El Morro is a must see if you are on the island, really interesting. I know, we had frost here this morning again. But. it’s to be expected. I can’t believe we are in the middle of November already. Happy week and happy reading.

After the devastation of last years hurricane, it must have been good for you to catch up with some of your family and friends, to satisfy yourself that they were all okay.
I enjoyed the photographs you took, although the temperatures would have been a lttle too hot for my liking.
We also have a similar umbrella installation in our local City of Bath during the summer and I believe it is also quite popular in other areas of the country. It certainly does cheer you up, doesn’t it?

I have a couple of Gillian Flynn books on my Kindle, although right now I seem to be caught in a loop of contemporary and historical fiction books for promotion and feature.
It is great news that you have some received some recognition for your lovely handiwork and the pink scarf does look good on the page.
Welcome back and thanks for sharing all your news 🙂

I would love to go to Puerto Rico. It must have been great catching up with family and friends. I thrive in sunny lands and cannot tolerate too cold temperatures. I haven’t read anything by Gillian Flynn, not even the popular Gone Girl. So exciting that Red Heart used your pink scarf pic. 🙂

I should try Gillian Flynn as I have heard good things.
Sounds like you had a good visit. We can relate a little to the hurricane destruction now after Michael.
I love the umbrellas which do appear ‘magical’.
That is cool to have your crochet project featured.
Happy Reading!

Sounds like you had a great vacation and got to reconnect with family, even though they are still recovering. I hear it will be a two-three year process. I hope it goes more quickly. The federal government needs to do more.
I’m so glad you gobbled up Sharp Objects. We read that in my book club…so many things to discuss

Hi Serena, it’s crazy how slow the process is. Unreal actually.
Sharp Objects was fantastic, I read Dark Places right after and am reading Gone Girl now.
Enjoy your weekend!

Thank you so much for thinking of us here in California. I know a few people who have had to evacuate and the news that continues to come in is not good, especially in the northern part of the state where my mom and brother are.
I am so glad you had a good time in Puerto Rico, Naida, visiting with family. I have wondered how the recovery process was going there as it hasn’t been as much in the news lately. The way Puerto Rico has been treated by the government is just awful.
The Vampire Knitting Club! I love that idea. Haha
I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Naida.

Hi Wendy, I am glad you are okay. That is so scary and hard to even imagine.
The recovery in PR is slow. I have family that live up in remote areas and they couldn’t get help in for days since there was no way in or out of there. Then no electricity for months. It’s hard to even imagine not having daily comforts like that. All over the island we’d see signs that would say “Puerto Rico will rise again.”
The Vampire Knitting Club was great, I really enjoyed it. I want to read more.
Enjoy your weekend too!
