Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 11/25/18: Vintage Things, Crochet and Random Updates

sunday (249x249)mm

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….

Happy Sunday and happy weekend. I cannot believe we are nearing the end of November and that Thanksgiving is over here in the U.S. I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving. We had a nice cozy one at home. I cooked this year for us and spent the day in my pajama’s. It was so nice not having to leave the house especially since the temps have been so low lately. I made the turkey and the sides and a pumpkin pie, I cheated with the pumpkin pie and bought frozen crust but it still came out yummy. I took Friday off so it’s been a nice 4 day weekend.

We had the first snowstorm of the season last week and that was a nightmarish commute home from work so I am glad it is over. I hope that’s not indicative of how this winter will be.

Also, we went to see Bohemian Rhapsody recently and it was fantastic. I know it got some mixed reviews but I think it was really a great tribute to the band and to Freddie Mercury. I’d been waiting for this one and it didn’t disappoint. The casting for the band was great and Rami Malek was awesome.

Onto my blog updates…

An ARC of Mind Games (Kaely Quinn Profiler Book 1) arrived via Bethany House Publishers for review. It sounds like a good thriller especially since the FBI agent on the case has a father who was a serial killer.

“Kaely Quinn’s talents as an FBI behavior analyst are impossible to ignore, no matter how unorthodox her methods. But when a reporter outs her as the daughter of an infamous serial killer, she’s demoted to field agent and transferred to St. Louis.

When the same reporter who ruined her career claims to have received an anonymous poem predicting a string of murders, ending with Kaely’s, the reporter’s ulterior motives bring his claim into question. But when a body is found that fits the poem’s predictions, the threat is undeniable, and the FBI sends Special Agent Noah Hunter to St. Louis.

Initially resentful of the assignment, Noah is surprised at how quickly his respect for Kaely grows, despite her oddities. But with a brazen serial killer who breaks all the normal patterns on the loose, Noah and Kaely are tested to their limits to catch the murderer before anyone else–including Kaely herself–is killed.”…

I posted my thoughts on Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn and Love, Faith and a Pair of Pants. I’m Gillian Flynn obsessed lately. Sharp Objects was great and Dark Places was also really good. I am reading Gone Girl now. Love, Faith and a Pair of Pants was a quirky novella but I had some issues with it.

Coming Soon:

My thoughts on Heart-Shaped Box, Dark Places and Rebecca are coming.

Crocheting:
I’ve been crocheting alot lately, especially Christmasy things. I finished up a Santa Pants Wine holder. The pattern over at RedHeart was easy to follow, but I changed the handles a little bit, crocheted them in the round and put a pipe cleaner inside each to make them stiff.

I’ve been making potholders too. I like making these since they are quick and easy. I will give these to family when we see them during the holidays.

Random:
I recently found a few of my old 1990’s cassettes when I was looking for old photo albums. I had to explain to my daughter what cassette tapes are and how you can’t just skip to whatever song you want lol.  These brought back memories. Some of these have got to be around 27 years old. I remember listening to Guns n Roses on cassette in my bedroom and smoking Marlboro cigarettes and blowing the smoke out of the window so my mom wouldn’t know like it was just yesterday…lol. Ahhh the memories. I thought I was so very cool and angsty in high school.

  1. We also had that snow here on Long Island. Luckily I was not too far from home. I am glad to hear that you liked Bohemian Rhapsody. I want to see it. You are reading an interesting bunch of books. I look forward to your upcoming reviews.

I also listened to Guns and Roses on Cassette 🙂

  2. We had a bunch of cassette tapes that we got rid of when we moved. It was dumb we should have sold them. Anyway, we had hundreds of them. I am sorry I gave them up. Same with our VHS tapes. What can you do. Anyway, have a wonderful week.

    • It’s funny how times change. They still sell cassette tapes now, the 80’s and 90’s are making a comeback lol. I have a few VHS as well still. Enjoy your weekend!

  3. No snow here yet, although we have had a couple of very frosty morning commutes. They do forecast a prolonged 14 day spell of very snowy weather here over Christmas and up to 28 days in the north of the country – You can bet your bottom dollar that when you actually want the weathermen to get it wrong, they will be bang on right!!

Hubbie is doing that most hated of chores today – leaf and gutter clearing. He is going to be cold, dirty and fed up when he come inside.

They did say, that like vinyl, casette tapes were going to make something of a comeback, but that has never really happened and the only cassettes that ever sell, are the talking books, which somehow seem to buck the trend.

I really like the sound of ‘Mind Games’ and as it is the first in the new Kaely Quinn series, I am very tempted to add this one to my own list – Thanks for sharing.

Work is mega manic, as is all retail in the run up to Christmas, so I probab;y won’t be posting too much over the coming weeks.

I hope that all is well with you and I’ll catch up with your news whenever I can 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne, I hope the snow isn’t too bad there. It’s so pretty to see when it’s falling but what a mess it becomes. Ugh the leaf cleaning ugh….snow shoveling is worse though I think.

You can still buy cassettes here, I’ve seen them online but I don’t see them other as novelty items, why bother really. I’m glad I saved mine, it’s a nice trip down memory lane.

I’ve just finished a Christmas romance and am reading Mind Games now. I think you would enjoy it.

I hope you get some downtime in, retail during the holidays is a nightmare. Take care xo

  4. Mind Games looks very good…enjoy! I like your crocheted pieces…and I had to smile about cassette tapes. Remember videotapes? And before there were VCRs, you had to stay home to watch a show. LOL

I do enjoy technology, but it’s fun to think back to different times.

Enjoy your week and thanks for visiting my blog.

    • Thank you! I still have a few videotapes too, movies lol. I know, remember before DVR? We couldn’t pause and rewind and fast forward or watch later. How quickly I got used to pause and rewind but in the beginning it confused me…lol.
      Enjoy your weekend!

  5. I’m glad you had a nice Thanksgiving. Ours was quiet, too. I cheated even more on my pie and got a frozen Mrs. Smith’s pie.

Your cassette collection reminds me a little of my LP collection, though I had somewhat less rock and more classical and folk music. I “ripped” most of my albums to cassette when I went to college (not that we called it ripping then), because cassettes and a tape player took less room—and anyway, the stereo system belonged to my parents, not to me.

The Santa pants wine holder is very cute! I like your idea to do the suspenders with pipecleaners so they stand up.

Have a great week, and enjoy your new books!

    • Thank you and enjoy your weekend! lol about the pies, no one will know, they taste yummy anyway.
And the good old days, with cassettes and LP’s. I remember recording songs off the radio onto my blank cassette tapes.

  6. Naida,

It sounds like you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family. It’s so nice to have an extra long weekend.

I have music cassette tapes as well, in my car. Many of them are homemade tapes of various bands, put together by my younger sister.

We saw Bohemian Rhapsody yesterday. I loved it! It gave me a renewed appreciation for Freddy Mercury and Queen. The movie’s enaging and energizing. Rami Malek became Freddy Mercury (although he resembles Mick Jagger very briefly while on stage at one point in the movie; I think it’s the hairstyle).

Your crocheted creations are SO BEAUTIFUL!

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, Naida.

    • Hi Susan, I had a nice Thanksgiving here thank you. I hope yours was wonderful as well.

Is’t it funny about the cassette tapes? Times change so much and so fast it feels like. I grew up with no internet and no cell phones, iPhones didn’t exist yet, my kids can’t wrap their brains around that lolol.

Glad you enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody, it was very awesome. And I agree Rami Malek became him, it was great to watch. I can see what you mean about the hair and Mick Jagger.

Thank you and enjoy your weekend! I haven’t been around too much on blogland but hope to get a review up and Sunday updates too for tomorrow.

  7. I need to see Bohemian Rhapsody. And read Gillian Flynn lol. Glad you had a nice Thanksgiving. We were able to stay home too and it was nice. Love long, relaxing weekends like that. 🙂

  8. Yay for a relaxed, Thanksgiving day dinner and for PJ pants time. Those kind of days are the best. I like the Christmas potholders you are making. They are handy for sure. I use the ones my mum had hooked up long ago to get the inner pot out from the rice cooker and to use as trivets also.

  9. Sounds like a very nice, relaxing Thanksgiving and weekend. I love your Christmas potholders – they are lovely… and such nice gifts. Ohhh- I have a box of cassettes in the cupboard. Guess I should consider getting rid of them as I try to declutter my house. We also have boxes (lots) of VHS tapes. We still have a player but only play certain favorites, including some for the kids.
I haven’t read Gillian Flynn but have heard good things. Mind Game looks good to me.
I hope you stay safe in the snow and enjoy Happy Reading!

  10. The year is flying by, isn’t it? I’ve been on the fence about Bohemian Rhapsody because of the mixed reviews – I’m not sure it’s still showing here but will have to check. Enjoy your new book!

  11. That crocheted wine holder is adorable!
I love Gillian Flynn too, I’ve enjoyed every one of her books, with Gone Girl being my favorite (maybe because it’s the first of hers I read). Happy reading!

  12. Such a great up-date.

I’ve heard so many good things about Bohemian Rhapsody but alas will probably only get to see it when it becomes available on DVD..

Loving the cover (and the title) of Love, Faith and a Pair of Pants (I’m away to read your thoughts on it) and, oh my goodness, that bottle holder, how adorable is that!

    • Thank you Tracy, I have fun doing the updates posts. I really enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody, I hope you do too if you watch it.

Love, Faith and a Pair of Pants was quirky, very different from my usual reads.

      Happy weekend 🙂

  13. We had the relaxed Thanksgiving also and the weather was fair. Now it’s freezing at night, but better at the end of the week which is good since I have leaves to rake.

I love the wine holder you crocheted, so cute! Have a great reading week! Anne – Books of My Heart

  14. Love the memory trip with the cassettes. I am pretty sure I still have mine and I may have some of the same ones you have here! haha.. Your festive crafty projects are turning out so cute. I wish I could have a do-over on Thanksgiving as I was dealing with a cold but oh well.
