Sunday Post 12/16/18: Reviews, Crochet and Counting Down to Christmas

sunday (249x249)

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…

Good morning and happy Sunday. Not that anyone needs reminding but Christmas is getting closer and closer people. And then that’s it. Goodbye 2018.

I’m almost ready for Christmas but not quite. Aside from my Amazon Prime orders, some of the gifts I ordered online have yet to arrive so I’m trying not to have a heart attack. They are due to be here before the 24th so they need to get here soon.

Also, I’ve been doing this some evenings lately, enjoying a glass of wine with dinner and looking at the tree.

It has been a hectic workweek as usual with early mornings and late nights. It’s that time of the year that it is dark in the mornings when I leave for work and it is dark again in the evenings when I come home from work. I’m working on saying “No” more to staying late nights because I can feel myself getting burnt out and rundown. On a positive note, our office holiday party is this week plus our Secret Santa swap for my department too so that should be fun. The holiday party is catered food all day in the cafeteria/lounge so you pretty much eat breakfast and lunch all day buffet style. I like it because A. I stuff my face as much as I want by refilling throughout the day and bringing it back to my cubicle if I chose to and B. it takes place at work already so there’s no having to make time one night to go out during the busy holidays.

Onto bookish news, I don’t have anything in my mailbox this week. That feels weird but it’s okay. I was good too because I had another Christmas romance in my hands at the supermarket yesterday by the book section but I put it back and I walked away and I finished my grocery shopping. I did post a few reviews this past week which was good and I have two more reviews coming up this week.

On the blog this past week:

heartdark
I shared my thoughts on Heart Shaped Box and Dark Places, which were both very good. Dark Places makes a top read for 2018.

Coming soon:

starryde
I’ve scheduled reviews for Starry Night: A Christmas Novel by Debbie Macomber to post on Tuesday and Delicate Crochet: 23 Light and Pretty Designs for Shawls to post on Thursday.

Reading now:

mind
I’m reading Mind Games (Kaely Quinn Profiler Book 1) by Nancy Mehl which is very good and I’m trying to finish it up this week for review. This one is especially intriguing because the FBI agent on the case has a father who was a serial killer. I’ve watched a few serial killer documentaries on the Discovery Channel and that’s terrifying and interesting to think about that some of these killers had families at home.

Crocheting:

I’ve been trying to finish up a shawl in Ombre yarn that has been on my hook for too long now so hopefully I can finish that soon so I can wear it.

Those are my updates this week. How have you been? Are you ready for the holidays? Have a great week 🙂
I’ll close with a little Wham because George Michael.

  1. I am not in the least bit ready for Christmas, but then, as there are only the two of us, it really is just like any other day.

The Wham! song is one of those stock favourites which comes out of cobwebs every year and Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without it. I see that we are following your US lead and banning some of the classic Christmas songs for not being quite politically correct enough for the modern day. I can see where they might be coming from, but have they listened to the lyrics of some of the modern ‘songs’? Do we really need to know all the whys and wherefores of the drugs and sex culture, especially with the more than offensive and colourful laguage used to get the message across!! … Let’s face it, more than a few of the so called ‘classic’ books would come into the categories of sexually offensive and misogynistic these days, yet we still continue to read and enjoy them. Surely vintage and slightly risque content should just be allowed to fizzle out under its own steam?

The yarn you are using in your shawl looks quite fine and soft, so I can see why it might be taking you a little longer than usual to work. It is definitely going to be a real show-stopper when it is finished, so well worth the time spent.

‘Mind Games’ sounds like an excellent book and as we are in at the beginning of a new series, I might well think about joining you in reading it.

Thanks for an interesting and entertaining post and if I don’t speak with you again, have a lovely Christmas 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne, I am glad Christmas came and went already though. We had a nice one with family but I am ready to have some downtime again. I hope you had a nice Christmas.

lol Wham are good classics, I love George Michael. They could ban almost everything at this point, everything offends at least someone and yes, what about the regular modern music? How is some of that not offensive? Anything goes at this point with the lyrics for some music artists. *rolling my eyes* The classics I’ve read are nowhere near as offensive as the lyrics to most of the songs on the radio now.

Thank you, I finished the shawl and will post a picture on an updates post soon. I’m behind schedule but just about done reading Mind Games. It was good.

Happy healthy new year to you 🙂 I hope you are getting some downtime to relax now that Christmas is gone.

  2. I haven’t read Dark Places yet. What a great cover! Heart Shaped Box was a good one. Enjoy your new books. I like the week before Christmas. It’s filled with anticipation and a rush to get things done. Makes me feel like a kid again, but more exhausting. LOL And I too ave been enjoying a nice glass of wine in the evenings while looking at my tree. It’s a lovely and relaxing way to unwind:)

  3. We’re mid-move, so we had to do all of our holiday stuff a little early. The kids didn’t mind! Haha! Hopefully all of your purchases arrive on time. I know that can be stressful. I love having glass of wine at the end of the day, and just sitting down and enjoying what’s around me. However, lately it’s been a margarita, because of the mid-move. I needed something with more oomph! Have a lovely holiday!

  4. I ordered most of my gifts online but they are here. We are going low-key this year with not traveling or decorating too much. Buffet sounds good. Maybe I’ll do buffet at home for us on Christmas.

I’m looking forward to your review on Mind Games because that sounds really good to me. Have a good week! Anne – Books of My Heart
