Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week’s TTT topic is Favorite Couples In Books.

Happy cold and snowy Tuesday everyone. With Valentine’s Day around the corner the romantic in me could not resist this week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic. Romance is my reading catnip, it really is. This became a favorite genre from when I was a tween reading Harlequin love stories featuring cowboys on the ranch sweeping damsels in distress off their feet. My taste in romance novels has definitely changed throughout the years. I enjoy reading about unconventional couples who somehow make it work and I actually prefer bittersweet endings. It was hard to narrow my list down to just ten but here are a few of my favorite literary couples…..

1. Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. These two are possibly my favorite literary/film couple of all time. I never get tired of watching GWTW. I love the tension between these two and the way they fall in love.

2. Adrienne and Paul in Nights in Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks. I ugly cried the last time I read this one.

3.  Noah and Allie in The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks  because Nicholas Sparks is the King of writing great literary couples.

4.  Buttercup and Westley in The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern’s Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure by William Goldman. Romance plus adventure and great characters = a great read. The film version is awesome.

5. Sebastian Dain and Jessica Trent from Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase. A historical romance classic and a must read if you enjoy this genre.

6. Eddie and Marguerite from The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. This is not a romance novel but it was moving the way he loved her. More ugly crying while reading.

7. Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Because Jane Austen novels are all you need in your life really. That and the BBC adaptations. And also the big screen film adaptations.

8. Anne Elliott and Frederick Wentworth in Persuasion . I love that they separated then got back together and that letter from Wentworth is everything. Jane Austen knew what a good match was.

9. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Another classic and timeless couple. So dramatic.

10. Cathy and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. Oh, the drama. These two are awful for each other, I don’t actually even like either of them but I can’t even count the times I’ve watched the BBC version or re-read the novel. Also, whoever cast Tom Hardy as Heathcliff needs some kind of award or something. Thank you.

  3. This is a great meme. You also made some great choices. Heathcliff and Catherine are an interesting but good choice. If I recall correctly, they were very different in the film version as compared to the book.

    • Thanks Brian, Heathcliff and Catherine annoy and interest me. Neither was likable. I can’t remember exactly if they were very different in the film, I know the film makes them extra romantic.

  4. Jane Austen is terrific. I want to listen to more of her books. P&P is my fave of course. I’ll have to check out Loretta Chase’s work; I’ve heard of her name before but can’t remember if I’ve read her books yet.
    I used to be a big time romance reader. I read nothing else but then I got tired of waiting for new books to come out from my favorite authors which is why I joined Goodreads and started following some book bloggers. My world has opened up.

    • If you use Spotify, there is a Jane Austen playlist of songs from movies inspired by Jane Austen books. I plan to rewatch Pride & Prejudice soon as well as that mini BBC series.

    • Yes, Jane Austen is a favorite. I recommend Loretta Chase, I want to read more of her books myself. I love Goodreads! I’ll have to check that out on Spotify, that’s a fun idea. Enjoy your weekend!

  11. You’ve captured some of my favorites here as well. Allie and Noah for sure. Anne and Frederick–love them! Elizabeth and Darcy–absolutely! And no couple can top Buttercup and Westley.

    Some of the classic and classical pairings are and will probably always be, the best.

    However, I do have to exclude Rhett & Scarlett from that list, as neither the book nor the film appealed to me in the slightest – purely a matter of personal taste.

    I know that I have read at least one Nicholas Sparks book, although it was so long ago now, that I just can’t for the life of me, remember which title it was. I have since come across quite a few male authors who write so well in what is traditionally very much a female dominated genre.

    Another male author who fits so well into the romance space, is Australian Dean Mayes and his couple of Denny, Sonya and Andy (this is only a couple – really! You need to read the book to find out why) who feature in his debut novel ‘The Hambledown Dream’, create a very moving storyline …

    • Hi Yvonne, I am adding The Hambledown Dream by Dean Mayes to my to-read list. I find reincarnation a fascinating subject and I love discovering new authors so thank you for the recommendation! It’s great finding a male author who can write romance. Aside from Sparks and John Green, I’ve read Ryan Winfield and enjoyed his first book, Jane’s Melody.
