Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 2/24/19: Random Updates

sunday (249x249)mm
The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….

Good morning everyone. I inadvertently took a blog break these last two weeks. Just busy with work and life in general so blogging took the back-burner once again.

So, it is still February. Then comes a long, cold March. Yuck. We had two minor snow storms these past two weeks that resulted in early dismissals from work which just meant driving home in snow and slush and traffic just a few hours earlier than normal. Then having the car covered in a sheet of ice the following morning. Well, enough with the complaining, Spring is around the corner, I can feel it. I want warm weather and nice scenic drives and the beach and food truck festivals….and walks in the park…

Onto my updates….

Recently on the blog…i.e. two weeks ago or more:

I shared my Top 10 favorite literary couples

I posted my thoughts on The Governess Game (Girl Meets Duke #2) by Tessa Dare .

In My Mailbox:

I borrowed a copy of In Farleigh Field: A Novel of World War II by Rhys Bowen via Amazon Prime.

“Inspired by the events and people of World War II, writer Rhys Bowen crafts a sweeping and riveting saga of class, family, love, and betrayal.”

Speaking of Rhys Bowen,  my blog friend Yvonne interviewed this author recently , click here for that.

Up next:

I am re-reading The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld #1) . I first read the first 5 books in this series years ago and the first book was a favorite. I wanted to revisit it.

And I know I said I would only read romance in February but I started reading Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory and I couldn’t stop. It was a great read and my thoughts will post this Friday.

Watching:
A friend recommended Russian Doll on Netflix and I binge watched it. It was really good. Dark humor. I’ve also still been watching The Walking Dead even though Rick is gone and there’s a cast of new characters that I don’t care much about. I’m curious about Negan, Daryl and Carol so.

And I have been watching Dynasties on BBC Earth and then actually crying. Specifically the Painted Wolf and the Lions episodes, so thank you BBC for that. I couldn’t take any more episodes. I can easily watch documentaries about serial killers, unsolved murders etc. and I barely flinch but show me a documentary about wild animals  surviving for so long and going through so much and losing members of their packs and families and I will cry. The Painted Wolf pack is run by their matriarch and in the end her alpha male would not leave her side when she was old and could not run as fast any longer. I felt better when I saw a snippet of “the making of Dynasties” then I saw one of the people filming and documenting the series was also crying from what he witnessed.

And as I mentioned, I have been keeping busy lately. We recently took a trip into NYC for a museum visit which was awesome. I’m not too big a fan of contemporary art but I find there is always something interesting to see and I just love New York. I’ll close with a few pics…

  1. Hi Naida,

Thanks so much for the mention of my recent interview with author Rhys Bowen, I appreciate that 🙂

I have a copy of ‘In Farleigh Fields’ sat on my Kindle, just waiting for the chance for me to read it. Given that Rhys originally hails from my part of the UK and about 4 or 5 miles away from us we have a ruin called Farleigh Castle, I am hoping to find out if there is any link, no matter how tenuous, between the two, as that would make for an even more intriguing read!

We have been out and about today, working on our weekend job with ‘Treasure Trails’, trying to get our most popular trails ship shape before Easter. The weather has been glorious without a cloud in the sky, wall to wall sunshine and temperatures in the high teens Celsius (about 65 Fahrenheit).Totally amazing for a February day …

Otis certainly looks the part with his newly groomed coat and I love the contemporary museum, it looks amazing and would be my ideal day out.

Thanks for such an interesting post, have a great week and Happy Reading 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne, happy to share it, I enjoyed your interview. That’s nice that she is from where you live, now I wonder if it’s the same Farleigh Castle.
Glad you are enjoying Treasure Trails, you have mentioned that before and it sounds fun, especially for the kids. It’s great being outdoors like that with nice weather.

I like Otis with the trimmed fur, his grows pretty long so I like to get him groomed every few months.
Enjoy the rest of your week and happy weekend 🙂 I can’t believe another week flew by again.

  2. I also have not been blogging as much as I would like to. Life gets too busy.

Despite the small snow storms, I have been happy with the mild winter. I am hoping for a warm or at least a mild March.

    As aways, Otis looks great!

    Happy Sunday!

    • Hi Brian, I know, life gets so busy and the time just flies by.
I hope we get a mild March, but I think we will have a snow storm like last March. These last two days we woke up to snow dustings which were pretty.
I prefer Otis with the short coat lol.
Enjoy the rest of your week and happy weekend!

  3. I think most of us are reading for spring. I feel for you having to drive in those conditions! I cannot even imagine. We’ve had quite a bit of rain, which has created it’s own issues here, as well as some ice due to the freezing temperatures. Hopefully March will bring warmer weather for us all. I know my daughter is ready for spring. She keeps asking if we can move up spring to start on her birthday. LOL She really wishes she were born in spring. I told her it’s close enough, we might as well say she was. You have me really wanting to read Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory. It sounds like a lot of fun. I really want to check out Russian Doll. I just started The Umbrella Academy. Ah, look at Otis! Such a sweetie! Have a wonderful week, Naida!

    • Hi Wendy, I am so ready for Winter to leave. I hope the weather warms up for you too.
Awww that’s cute. Her birthday will be here soon then.
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes was a good one, I’m glad I read it. My review is set to post tomorrow.
I haven’t seen Umbrella Academy, I’ll have to check it out. I enjoyed Russian Doll and also recently Sabrina was good too.
Enjoy your weekend! Another week has flown by.

  4. Happy Sunday, Naida! Thanks for this update. Smoke Gets In Your Eyes sounds quite intriguing. Otis is such a cutie pie! I always adore the pics of him. I, too, love NY, and the Guggenheim is a special museum. Have a super week ahead!

    • Hi Susan, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes was interesting.
Otis is good at the groomer, he knows what is going on. The groomer says he is very easy to style. I prefer the short coat on him.
I love NY too, we had a nice day at the museum. Enjoy your weekend!

  5. I hear you on the weather! Spring sounds great, and I’m ready for food trucks too haha! I’m trying to stick with TWD too but it’s hard. I’m with you though on Daryl and carol, I’m still interested to see where they take those two. A lot of the new characters are meh.

I’ve only read one book by Rhys Bowen but I liked it.

    • Yes to warm weather and food trucks. I am ready.
TWD is really testing me lately, it’s a little boring too but I can’t not watch. I need to see it through till the end.
This will by my first Rhys Bowen book.
      Enjoy your weekend!

  8. I love anything set during WWII. In Fairleigh Field sounds great. I can’t imagine what it would be like living in such cold temperatures. No snow or ice here even in the midst of winter and I still complain about the cold.:)

  9. A whirlwind of activity for you! March is a long month for us as we have not one holiday off and Easter is so damn late this year that we don’t have spring break until nearly the end of April.
