Top Ten Tuesday 4/30/19: Inspirational/Thought Provoking Book Quotes

ttt

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week’s TTT topic is “Inspirational/Thought Provoking Book Quotes”.
I love a good book quote. Memorable passages in novels tend to stop me in my tracks while I am reading. I like to re-read them before moving on. I usually highlight the quotes I like on my e-reader or *gasp* I dog ear the pages on my print copies for reference later.

I could list 100 favorites, but these are just 10 Favorite Quotes From Some of My Favorite Books

1. “He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God. So he waited, listening for a moment longer to the tuning fork that had been struck upon a star. Then he kissed her.” – The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

2. “There is nothing like looking, if you want to find something. You certainly usually find something, if you look, but it is not always quite the something you were after.”- The Hobbit by  J. R. R. Tolkien.

3. “I have a meanness inside me, real as an organ. “- Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

4. “Full circle, he thought while the lethargy crept into his limbs. Full circle. A new terror born in death, a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever.
I am legend.” –   I Am Legend by Richard Matheson

5. “I believe in happy endings with all my heart.”- The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick

6. “It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.” –Alice Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

7. “It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

8. “She was becoming herself and daily casting aside that fictitious self which we assume like a garment with which to appear before the world.”- The Awakening by Kate Chopin

9. “Monsters are real. Ghosts are too. They live inside of us, and sometimes, they win.”- The Shining  by Stephen King

10. “What are men to rocks and mountains?”- Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Those are some of my favorite book quotes, what are some of yours? Enjoy your week!

  1. I’ve seen several people post the Harry Potter quote. It’s a good reminder to me, I think.

Here’s another Harry Potter quote that I just ran across today: “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.”

I’ll keep thinking about these HP quotes. Thank you!

  2. Thank you for sharing your great list of quotations, Naida! I am especially loving the second one today, and will copy it.
I’ve got a few on my blog as well (from previous years).

  3. I love both The Hobbit and Alice in Wonderland quotes! I’ve always enjoyed Alice in Wonderland, and love how wordy and meaningful the story is. Great picks! I also like The Great Gatsby, but this is the first TTT where someone used a quote (that I’ve seen). 🙂

  4. Great quotes! You are the THIRD person to point me toward The Great Gatsby in a week. (One was when I actually found a used copy and picked it up and began reading it. Haven’t read it since High School and greatly enjoying it.) I suppose I love me anything by Anne Lamott. “For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die.”

    • Thanks Andrea. The Great Gatsby is very quotable. My copy was also used, I think I bought it at a library sale.
I like that Anne Lamott quote, thank you for sharing it! It is true, books can bring comfort or peace or excitement.
And that is a coincidence about The Awakening….another favorite classic.
Thanks for stopping in and your thoughtful comments…I’ve been off blogland but am catching up a little this morning. Enjoy your week!

  5. Meant to say also that I’ve read 6 of those 10 and also, as a synchronicity, someone read me a long anonymous writing called “The Awakening” today. Different than the book you mentioned, but to me life is in these synchronistic moments. Thank you.
