Top Ten Tuesday 11/12/19: Favorite Bookmarks

ttt

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week’s TTT topic is Favorite Bookmarks.

I have a confession to make. I sometimes dog-ear my books. I know. For shame. But not as much as I used to. I use bookmarks more often than not. Some are actual bookmarks, most are impromptu bookmarks such as paperclips, receipts and photographs because I lose and misplace my bookmarks easily. That is what I like about my e-reader, highlighting and bookmarking is so convenient.

Here is a list of things I like to use as bookmarks:

1. Actual bookmarks. My very faded and well worn old Gone With the Wind bookmark is a favorite.

2. Paperclips. I try not to do this though because they will tear the page easily.

3. Postcards. I have several postcards that I have collected and use as bookmarks.

4. Bookmarks that I crochet myself. These are easy to make and I enjoy whipping them up.

5. Invoices. When I receive a hard copy of a review book from a publisher or an author I will keep the invoice or the letter that accompanies the review book to use as a bookmark for that particular book. This is easy reference for my review when keeping track of when the book arrived, who sent it etc.

6. Dog-eared pages. I am sorry. I will say I don’t do this as often as I used to though.

7. Post-its. Folded ones, so not to rip the page by mistake when I am taking it off.

8. Photographs. I use my own pictures most of all for bookmarks. Mainly ones of my kids.

9. Greeting cards. I have used these as bookmarks in the past.

10. Receipts and coupons. I do this all the time. I will stick a coupon in my current read for using later.

What about you? What are your favorite bookmarks or items to use as bookmarks? Enjoy your day and happy reading!

  1. A very amusing post. I also use a variety of makeshift bookmarks including stickies. I do have a huge stash of cheap bookmarks from an educational company but they are kept in a place that is not always handy to access. I read a lot of ebooks these days so that solves the problem too.

    • Thanks Brian. Ebooks are convenient when it comes to bookmarking and highlighting at least. It’s funny seeing all the different things people use as makeshift bookmarks. Enjoy your weekend!

  2. Hi Naida,

Like most of my fellow readers these days, ebooks kind of solve the problem of bookmarks, although I have to admit to making handwritten notes with genuine pen and paper, rather than use the Kindle’s highlighting and bookmarking facility.

I have used just about all of the items you mention as a bookmark, although I would never use a paperclip for fear of tearing the pages. I also never turn down page corners and flattening or breaking a spine is a definite no no!!

I have often thought about collecting bookmarks, however I am supposed to getting rid of some of the clutter around the place, not adding to it and I think that hubbie may draw the line at yet another collection, no matter how small the items are!

A great little discussion topic to chase away those Tuesday blues, thanks for sharing 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne, I know what you mean, it’s so easy and tempting to start collect something. I’ve collected mugs for a while and had to tone it down because there’s really no room for them. I tend to buy one when I travel anywhere as a souvenir.
Hope you are enjoying your weekend keeping warm!

    • Greeting cards come in handy as bookmarks. I’ve lost several of my favorite bookmarks throughout the years that’s why makeshift ones are easiest. Happy reading!

  3. Yes, to all of these. Often it’s whatever is handy for me. I’ve dogeared corners in a pinch as well. If it’s your own book, I don’t see anything wrong with it. I have quite a collection of bookmarks, but I so often don’t use them unless I happen to have one handy or already tucked in my book. Of course, with the e-reading I do now, I rarely need bookmarks or their substitutes at all.

  4. I collect bookmarks but I don’t want to mess them up so I rarely actually use them. Instead I use a lot of receipts or if I order from places like Book Depository that include bookmarks in their packages, I’ll use those bookmarks.

  5. Awesome TTT post! I love bookmarks and have a quite a bit of a collection. I do use receipts or post-its every once in a while too but I can probably count the times I’ve had to dog-ear a book. Your crocheted bookmark is so sweet.
