Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday May 17, 2020: Book updates, crochet and still staying home

sunday (249x249)mm
The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…
Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….

Good morning and I hope this post finds you safe and well. I hope the moms had a nice Mother’s Day last Sunday. I had a really nice one at home with my family and was spoiled with these thoughtful presents, all of which were ordered online….
gifts

I dropped a homemade cake for my mom and a pink rose-bush I ordered online for her garden and we chatted through her window a little. It’s sad but I’m also grateful. Our stay-at home order was extended another 30 days from the May date so we’re inside until June. I’m still working from home until then at least which I’m fine with. Today marks day 56 of quarantine. My indoor allergies have gotten bad so I had a virtual visit with my allergist last week which was interesting. I feel that will be the norm for a while.

onto my bookish updates…

recently on the blog:

lincoln
I posted my thoughts on Mrs. Lincoln’s Sisters by Jennifer Chiaverini which I really enjoyed.

coming soon:
brave
My reading has been slow this past week but I’m just about finished with Brave Girl, Quiet Girl by Catherine Ryan Hyde and will share my thoughts soon.

in my mailbox: There have been some great covers in my mailbox lately…
gilmore
Puppy Kisses (Forever Home Book 3) by Lucy Gilmore arrived via Sourcebooks Casablanca and NetGalley. The puppy on the cover!
“These adorable service puppies are matchmakers in the making…”

knit
Knit of the Living Dead (A Knit & Nibble Mystery Book 6) by by Peggy Ehrhart arrived via NetGalley and Kensington Books. How cute is this cover?

audio
I received The Dead Boy’s Club (Club Dead Book 1) by Rue Volley on audio from CaffeinatedPR and I’m excited to get to this one soon.

watching:
I got hooked on Waco on Netflix which is just 6 episodes and based on real events. We also watched Free Solo  which is an interesting one episode documentary on the Disney app. This guy rock climbs with no equipment.

crochet:
shirt
I finished up this yellow cotton top for myself and I love it. It fits perfectly. I didn’t follow any pattern, I made the front panel then the back and seamed them together and added the sleeves.

That wraps up my updates this week, how was your week? Thanks for stopping in and stay well.

  1. Oh, yes, virtual doctor visits are different, but thanks to the phone app, not so bad.I have done Skype and FaceTime with the kids. Haven’t had a window visit. Soon, perhaps.

I like Catherine Ryan Hyde’s books, so I’m going to check out Brave Girl, Quiet Girl.

Have a safe and well week, and thanks for visiting my blog.

  2. I have an opthalmologist appointment coming up. They’ve asked patients to wear masks but haven’t said if they’ll be wearing them. I want to check on that before I go in.

I just got Mrs. Lincoln’s Sisters so I’m glad you liked it.

    • It’s interesting how they are setting up the appointments now. I chose the virtual visit but my allergist office re-opened the office. They are only taking one patient inside the office at a time. So you have to wait in your car until they call you in.
      Enjoy Mrs. Lincoln’s Sisters!

  3. Here on Long Island we are also going to be in lockdown for a awhile. Our parks are open so I do run during the week and go for longer walks with my wife on weekends. I will be working from home until at least August 1. I work in a building with a lot of people so even when things open up, social distancing is nearly impossible in my workplace.

    • Hi Brian, I’ve been walking/jogging early mornings around my neighborhood here, it’s nice getting fresh air and makes a difference going outdoors for walks.
That’s good you are working from home until August. I also work in a building with alot of people in it so I don’t know how they will handle that. It’s pretty impossible to social distance inside the building.

Stay well and enjoy your reading this week.

  4. My daughter has been doing the tele-medicine which has been working well for her. I’m glad you are able to stay home and work from home. I’m grateful we can do it too.

All your books have such lovely covers! What a cute top! I always do better with knitting than crotchet for clothes.. My crotchet is too loose so too many holes to see through.

I hope you have a great week and stay well!

    • Tele-medicine is a great option right now.
Thank you, I had fun making the top. I use a smaller hook for tops and sweaters and find it works well.
Stay well and enjoy your books this week.

  5. Hi! Naida,

They are beginning to relax the lockdown rules a little over here, but that doesn’t really affect us too much, as Dave is in the vulnerable group anyway, although he is now able to work from home, so at least he feels part of things in the office!

We haven’t seen any family since February, so it will be good to get things back to a bit of ‘normality’, but I don’t think that is going to be anytime soon!

It would be really good if they could find a safe way of helping people with their personal well-being. Things like hairdressers, opticians, dentists etc. Just one visit would make so much difference to our outlook on life. Perhaps then folks would be a little more compliant with the rules.

They are trying to get some of the children back into school on June 1st, but there has been huge push-back from both teachers and parents alike, so I’m not sure what the outcome is going to be.

I really enjoy Catherine Ryan Hyde’s writing and this book is a new one to me, so I shall be waiting to see what you think of it. I see you have a couple of cozies in your mailbox this week and although not a genre I read from too often, in these strange times, a bit of light relief is always welcome.

The crochet top looks lovely and is that some Yves St. Laurent product I spy in your lovely gift bundle?

Take Care and enjoy your week. Happy Reading 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne,
That’s good you are able to stay home and your husband is working from home. I want to get back to normal as well, but who knows when that will happen.

They are opening the beaches here and I am worried that it is too soon. I noticed people are really getting lax with social distancing while being out so I am trying to take my walks/jogs during the week early mornings to avoid others since the weather has been nice and alot more people are out now.
They closed schools here for the rest of 2020, virtual learning from home is taking place instead.

I like Catherine Ryan Hyde’s books also and am enjoying this one.

Yes! My daughter knows I like Yves St. Laurent makeup products so she spoiled me even though I tell her not to buy me anything.
Enjoy your week and your books, stay well.

  6. The county I live in is bucking a bit against our governor’s shelter in place order. And there are business owners who are taking advantage of that and have opened already–restaurants letting people dine in. They are crowded with people. I hope it doesn’t mean things will get worse, but I worry that will be the case. So many people not taking this seriously . . .I am glad you enjoyed Mrs. Lincoln’s Sisters. I have been curious about that one.

Puppy Kisses looks so cute! The cover, I mean. It sounds good too.

I hope you have a great week, Naida. Stay safe and well.

    • Hi Wendy, I noticed the same thing happening all over the place. It’s scary people are not taking this seriously. We took a drive out this weekend and noticed the line to the walk up ice-scream shop was very long and the people on line were not standing 6 feet apart. The beaches are also open here and from what I’m seeing online they are crowded and people are not social distancing there either.

Mrs. Lincoln’s Sisters was good, I recommend. And I couldn’t’ avoid Puppy Kisses.
Stay well and enjoy your reading this week.

  7. Glad you had a good Mother’s Day. And yes the quarantine continues. We’re still under stay-at-home as well although lots of people are out and about. Sticking pretty close to home still around here though. Our order expires end of May and we’ll see what happens after that I guess.

stay safe and be well this week!

    • Thank you. Yes, we are staying close to home also. We are taking early morning walks around the neighborhood while it’s still quiet out. From what I noticed people out there are being very lax with social distancing now that the temps are warming up especially.

Stay well and enjoy your books this week.

  8. I’m impressed with the top you made – and with no pattern. You are talented! I’ve been knitting a wrap for one of my sisters during quarantine. If I remember I’ll post a pic when I finish.
I hope you have a good week of reading, etc. And I hope the allergy symptoms ease.

  9. I love your new wool. Beautiful colour. Puppy kisses looks so cute and The Dead Boys Club audio has the most gorgeous cover.

  10. I’ve had a couple dentist appointments for a root canal and it’s such a strange experience now. Started with a virtual appointment too, then at the clinic. One person at a time in the clinic, all personnel in PPE from head to toes, plenty of new rules… I do think this is the new normal, for a time at least.

Knit of the Living Dead has such an adorable cover. Kittens and yarn, what more could one wish for? Enjoy your new books, and have a great week!

  11. A belated happy Mother’s Day … what a strange one it must have been with gifts for the main part purchased online and lots of greetings made through open windows, mothers and daughters unable to hug one another.

Away to add Knit of the Living Dead to my Wish List I can’t resist a good pun and this cover is one of the cutest I’ve seen in a long time, perfect for lockdown blues.

    • Thanks Tracy, it was different not being able to do the usual brunch we do every Mother’s Day.
The cover on Knit of the Living Dead is so cute and I can’t wait to read it.

  12. Me again.

Having decided not just to add it to my wish List but to purchase it and what do I find? Yep! “This title will be released on August 25, 2020” Hopefully well out of lockdown before then but I need it NOW.

  13. Your crochet top is adorable! Glad to hear you had a lovely Mother’s Day and do I see some YSL lipsticks? Very nice! I love wearing lipstick but even once we go back to work I’ll be masked so that’s depressing. Anyway, like you I do get to work from home for a while longer and I’m ok with that. Wishing you a great week ahead!

    • Thanks Iliana, I had fun making the top.
Yes, my daughter knows I like YSL makeup and she spoiled me. I don’t know yet when I go back to work, I’m thinking maybe June . The masks are definitely depressing!
      Have a good week also!

We are getting more restrictions lifted every day. We do hope all goes well.
I love the title and look of Knit of the Living Dead – so cute!
Good job on your yellow top. I bet completing a project like that is satisfying.
I hope you have a good week and enjoy your reading!
