Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 9/21/2020: Updates, Crochet Etc.

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…
Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….

Hi all. Hope you had a nice weekend. We’re having nice weather here with it cooler in the mornings and evenings but still warm during the day. September is flying right on by and I’m definitely in the Autumn/Halloween mood. It’s been another crazy kind of week but I’m just going with the flow. We’re still quarantining but I did notice an uptick in the numbers of positive cases reported these past 2 weeks in New Jersey. They’ve opened movie theaters, gyms and indoor dining with limited capacity here. We are still passing on anything indoors and sedentary like that for now. The anxiety I’ve had from my doctor’s appointments these past few months is bad enough. How are things in your area?

onto my updates….
in my mailbox:
I grabbed a copy of The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper through Amazon Prime. I’ve watched several Jack the Ripper documentaries and this book caught my eye because it focuses on the victims instead of the killer.
“Five devastating human stories and a dark and moving portrait of Victorian London—the untold lives of the women killed by Jack the Ripper”

recently on the blog:

I shared my thoughts on My Little Crocheted Christmas by Doerthe Eisterlehner which is a nice pattern book. I made a snowman candle cozy that somehow looks like a penguin but that’s ok.

watching:
All things scary including the last Halloween film, which I thought was really good and The Exorcism of Emily Rose which was terrifying but also very sad. Have you seen these?

Also of note, I am good and hooked on Real Life Ghost Stories the podcast. I can’t get enough of these scary stories lately and I’ve been listening while crocheting.

crochet:
I whipped up a few pumpkins not too long ago and have been making more. These are addictive to make.

Last but not least, Happy Birthday today to a favorite Stephen King.

That wraps it up for now. What are you up to lately? Can you recommend a scary film? Happy week ahead and stay well.

  1. Hi Naida,

I love your crocheted pumpkins and the book of little Christmas decorations you plan to work on. I think that almost all Halloween, Christmas and New Year events have been cancelled this year, so it is definitely going to be a strange one!

‘The Five’ wouldn’t usually be my kind of book, however it sounds so well researched, that I might give it a try. I think I’ll wait and see what you think about it first!

We have actually watched less television since lockdown began, but that is because we have been out in the garden so much, making the most of the extended summer weather. That will probably change once the weather cools down, which is due to happen at the end of this week and hubbie has been saving up many episodes of some really vintage programmes to watch.

Happy Reading and stay safe 🙂

    • Thanks Yvonne. And yes, the holidays this year will definitely look very different. I miss the apple picking this season but instead we went up to the farm early and picked up a pie which was nice.
I can’t wait to read The Five, I’m intrigued.

That’s nice you have been enjoying the garden. The weather here has been nice lately with it still warm during the days and I try to make a point to sit out in the yard with my book for at least 30 minutes daily. Before you know it the freezing cold winter will be here 😦

      Enjoy your books this week!

  2. I am on Long Island. I do not think that things are too different here. Our movie theaters are not yet open. Hopefully we will not get another wave when the weather gets cold.

The five looks very interesting. We hear too little about the targets of famous cases

  3. Our numbers are starting to go down, which is good news. Hopefully it will continue. We are still pretty much keeping to ourselves too. We did venture out last night to deliver homemade cookies to friends. One of my daughter’s class assignments was to pick a charity and collect money for it. She decided she wanted to do a back sale. We kept our distance and wore masks. No contact deliveries.

The Five does sound good. I hope you enjoy it when you read it.

Such sad news about Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A great woman is lost. I hope we do not let her down.

    Have a great week, Naida!

    • Hi Wendy,

That’s good the numbers are down by you. What a crazy year this has been. Aw, delivering the homemade cookies for charity is so nice!

Yes, very sad about Ruth Bader Ginsburg. An icon.

Enjoy your books this week 🙂

  4. Those pumpkins are adorable! And I like the My Little Crocheted Christmas book.
My hubby and I are still minimalizing our outings. I appreciate your caution.
I know our church family would like us to come in person but I learned recently that some members had tested positive for the virus. They are young and I am sure (and pray) they will be fine, but my hubby can’t have that risk. He only has 33% lung capacity and struggles with oxygen as it is.

I am lining up some horror stories for October. It is the right month for those.
I hope you enjoy the changing weather, stay safe and Happy Reading!

    • Thank you.
Oh wow, hopefully those who tested positive will recover quickly. It’s so scary. Yes, then it’s definitely best to stay safe with your husband and the lung capacity issue.

Stay well and happy reading too!

    • Thanks, I just made more this week to gift to an Aunt. They are fun to make.

That’s nice you were the only ones at the theater! And that your numbers are very low. I miss the movies and I miss going out for margaritas and Mexican food.
