Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 7/11/2021: Summertime Updates

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…
Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….

Hello all and happy weekend. I haven’t posted an updates post since May and time is flying as usual. I hope you are doing well and enjoying your summer. Summer tends to get busy for us because both my kids and my husband have birthdays back to back, and it seems like each weekend we have plans, then we try to fit in a vacation trip as well. I can’t complain, I love the summer months and enjoying the sunshine as much as I can.

Maybe TMI but in the midst of being busy with work and family these past few months, I had to have a root canal. A painful complicated one that involved two one and a half hour long visits to a specialist who gave me THREE shots of Novocain per visit, a round of antibiotics and prescription painkillers which after taking just one pill I decided to stick to Advil forever. I’m glad it’s over and done with and I hope to never have to go through that again in this lifetime or the next.

Anyway, on a good note, work announced the hybrid schedule is permanent so I am happy about that. It’s great working from home a few days a week then driving into the office a few days. I’m finding it a nice balance.

And I was finally away on vacation recently doing alot of this which was very relaxing:

Onto my bookish updates…..

recently on the blog:

I shared my thoughts on Sarana and the Dark King by Ivy Keating.

I reviewed The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah.

In my mailbox:

After loving The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah I ordered The Great Alone by the same author.

I received The Bookshop Murder by Merryn Allingham via Bookouture, The Santa Suit by Mary Kay Andrews via St. Martin’s Press and Neon Gods by Katee Robert via Sourcebooks Casablanca.

I purchased The Power by by Naomi Alderman and this fun bookish tote at the coziest little Indie bookstore I found while on vacation. It was a little book cabin and the owner was very nice.

crochet
I crocheted a coffee cup coaster and cozie for my cubicle.

I finished up my son’s blanket. I made this for him as one of his birthday gifts in May.

watching:
We watched all 3 Thor movies and are watching the Avengers films next so we can watch the new Loki series. Have you watched any of these?

That wraps up my updates, what are you up to? What are you reading? Otis says enjoy your weekend and stay safe 🙂

  1. Otis is adorable. I’m still knitting the same sweater for Lulu, no knitting recently because of all the yard work. I think it’s great you are enjoying your summer. Also, it is good to know they have settled on a hybrid schedule more permanently. I think some work from home well and others do not.

  2. Oh my, that sounds like a horrendous root canal! Yikes. Glad that that’s behind you. I’ve had those, they’re no fun but not anything like that! Hope you had a great vacation.

I love that cover of the Andrews book- very holiday inspiring lol.

    • The root canal was not fun but vacation was wonderful. I’m a seasonal reader so I’ll wait a little bit on that Andrews one lol, closer to the publication date.
      Happy reading this week!

  3. I enjoyed The Four Winds, and would love to sit in that very spot with the book and a glass of wine! Thanks!

I love that blanket and the book cabin shots. Sounds like a perfect getaway. Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

  4. Yay for vacation time away. I’m liking the hybrid work mode I am in as well. We should have done it sooner. Hope your teeth issues continue to recover well. And enjoy your latest reads 🙂

  5. Hi Naida,

I haven’t had any root canal work done, however I did have a rare infection in one tooth which required three lengthy visits to the dentist, with an eventual extraction, and plenty of shots too! Not nice is it? I have every sympathy and hope you are fully recovered now!

I too seem to have a penchant for collecting tote bags, they are so versatile and fit in my handbag neatly rolled up, just in case I need one!

We have decided against a holiday away this year, as it looks as though everywhere is going to be rammed with people ‘staycationing’. It is already bad enough out there and when all restrictions are taken away on July 19th, it is going to get much worse!

I simply didn’t have the time to take part in the Bookouture ‘Books On Tour’ feature for ‘The Bookshop Murder’, although I do have my Netgalley request in for a review copy, so I am waiting on that one coming through, the premise really sounds good! Let’s hope we both enjoy it 🙂

The summer holidays haven’t officially started here, as the schools don’t break up until the end of next week, but I am pleased that you are getting to spend some of it at home as you work hybrid. Have a great time with the family 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne, teeth can be so complicated. Thank you! I’m feeling better now.
Tote bags always come in handy and I couldn’t resist that bookish one. I know, the restrictions have been lifted here also and people are acting like nothing ever happened. We continue to wear our masks and keep our distance from strangers. So many maskless people everywhere.
The Bookshop Murder is good so far, I’m enjoying it. Enjoy it when you read it too! Have a good week

  6. Sorry to hear about the root canal but at least that is done with! And, hurray for a hybrid work schedule. I’m doing that as well and really like it. The blanket you made for your son turned out so nice! Hope you enjoy all the sunshine you can get and with all those good reads ahead!

  7. I had root canals when I was young. I still cringe at the sound of the drill even though the dentist rarely hurts anymore. They tend to give me double novocaine even for a small filling.

Looks like a lovely vacation and it is always fun to find sweet book stores.
Otis is just so cute, especially with his sweaters.
Have a good week and Happy Reading!

  8. Root canals are no fun. I hope you won’t have to have another. I am glad you were able to get away for a vacation and enjoy yourself. It was much deserved! Yay for the hybrid schedule becoming permanent. That is great news. I am glad my office decided on a hybrid schedule too. This week will be my first full week in office in over a year. I’ve gone in for a day every week to every other week the past few months since the beginning of the pandemic. My entire team will be in the office with me and I’m looking forward to seeing them again in person.

I hope you enjoy your books! Have a great week, Naida. Give Otis a pet from me. He’s so cute.

    • Thanks Wendy. Hybrid work schedule is so much better. I feel I get more accomplished when I’m working from home because there’s less interruptions. Yes, it’s nice seeing co-workers again after so long.
I’ve been having lunch outdoors with my good work friends on our breaks again now and I’d missed that alot.

Enjoy your books this week! 🙂

Oh, Otis is too cute for words! Love his tiny sweater!
All of your crocheted creations are AMAZING!
I’m glad the root canal agony is over.
    Great vacation pics!
The bookworm tote bag is so perfect for you!
Enjoy your reading this week. 🙂

  10. I always find it funny that mention anything dental and we all have toothache, mention a rash and we all are itching.

Liking the look of Sarana and the Dark King and, that time of year when my mind turns to my Christmas reading, i’ll be sure to check out The Santa Suit
