Author Guest Post: Discoucia by Nick Lovelock

Hello blog friends. Please join me in welcoming author Nick Lovelock to my blog today as he stops by while on virtual tour to discuss his inspiration behind writing his book, Discoucia.

First,  bit about the book….

Discoucia: A Victorianish Fairytale

Revolution, romance and technological wonders are all in a day’s work for the decorated hero of Alavonia, Sir Arthur Pageon.

An acclaimed explorer and inventor, Sir Arthur Pageon takes his unofficial role as defender of the realm of Alavonia very seriously. A fantastical world, Alavonia is home to the Discoucian Monarchy, as well as monstrous creatures and secretive academies for the highly gifted.

Upon returning from his most recent exploits aboard on his personal flying galleon The Nostradamus, Pageon is treated to a hero’s welcome and celebratory procession through the streets of Alavonia’s capital, Evermore. Little does Pageon know he’s being followed by a mysterious group known as the Purple Guard, whose devious leader is his estranged sister, Queen Lily Pageon of Harrha Island. Fiercely intelligent, Lily specialises in dastardly technological inventions with the aim of bringing down the Discoucian Monarchy so that she may reign as its dictator. However, the heir to the throne is one Princess Josephine Olandine, whose youth and royal position masks her role in the Discoucian Secret Service.

Joining forces, Princess Josephine and Sir Arthur’s adventures will take them across the whole of Alavonia — from the fog-bound shores of Karga, to the secret underground shanty town beneath the frozen prison of Icester, south to the verdant city of Proceur and from there to the affluent Starfall Academy — in their quest to foil Lily’s revolutionary plans.

Onto the guest post….

Inspiration for Discoucia

The World of Discoucia was always going to be an amalgamation of Britain and America, since at one point in time they were both ruled by the same monarch and its thirteen original colonies seem to have a still-English feel in comparison to later and more modern cities. The age seems to be early 1800s, with High King Olandine being inspired by William IV since he was the king that preceded Victoria. The land really is all about hundreds of different references to popular culture put in their respective places.

Excerpt from Pound For Pound: A Story of One Woman’s Recovery and the Shelter Dogs Who Loved Her Back to Life

Good morning everyone. I hope your weekend is going well. I hope to spend a good chunk of mine relaxing, reading and just enjoying some downtime.

Today I am posting an excerpt from Pound For Pound: A Story of One Woman’s Recovery and the Shelter Dogs Who Loved Her Back to Life by Shannon Kopp. Being an animal lover and having my own two fur babies at home, I happily accepted a review copy of Shannon’s memoir from FSB Associates. I know how therapeutic having four legged friends can be and how much joy that bond can bring. Shannon’s story intrigued me and I will be sharing my thoughts on her book sometime next week.

Read on for the excerpt….

At 7 a.m., my name was called for “Morning Vitals.” Light poured in through the windows and I begrudgingly changed out of my boyfriends T-shirt into a white paper gown. I wanted to sleep more. I wanted coffee. I wanted to kiss Danny. I wanted to kill the shepherd-eyes woman, who was now sleeping peacefully. Apparently, it wasn’t her turn yet for vitals.

Author Spotlight and Interview: Drake Vaughn

authorinterview

Hello all. I have author Drake Vaughn stopping in today for an interview. It is always interesting to find out about the author behind the work.

Drake’s latest book is called When the Devil Climbs. Please read on for the interview…

BW: Welcome to my blog Drake, please tell us about yourself.

DV: I’m a horror author whose “crinkled fiction” is a blend of the thrilling macabre, dark humor, and supernatural madness with a heavy psychological bent. I enjoy writing about the shadowy, gruesome corners of the human experience and eerie tales of the occult.

BW: When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

DV: I started as a passionate reader, which helped cement an interest in telling my own stories. As a child, I created a book in the second grade about the death of a crayon, so I guess I always had a morbid curiosity. I also enjoyed cartooning in school where I’d draw caricatures of the teachers in goofy situations. I’d pass them around to get laughs, mostly from the girls, so I guess that was a strong motivation as well. Mostly, I enjoy the exploring of ideas that speculative fiction offers.
