Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 11/20/22: Happy Thanksgiving

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists…

Hi all, I hope this post finds you well. It’s finally gotten pretty cold out, we’ve had the temps in the 40’s and we had a dusting of snow. I’m working fully remote through next month so I’m happy not to have to go out in the cold early mornings. I cannot believe November is flying by so fast and Thanksgiving is this week. I took the day after off so I’m looking forward to a long cozy upcoming weekend. The past several years we stay home and I cook the meal and my daughter helps me. I bought all my Thanksgiving ingredients with my last grocery trip. My job is nice enough to gift each employee a turkey so I picked mine up this week and I have it defrosting in the fridge as of this morning. Every year I bake candied yams with marshmallows on top but this year I’m going to use this recipe which calls for pecans. Are you ready yet? How do you spend Thanksgiving? Do you have a favorite recipe?

onto my updates….

recently on the blog:

I shared my thoughts on In Her Highlander’s Bed by Lynsay Sands.

coming soon:

I’m reading The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth and it’s so good!

in my mailbox:

Say Goodbye for Now by Catherine Ryan Hyde. I have yet to read a book by Catherine Ryan Hyde that I didn’t enjoy. Her books are just special that way.

watching:

I watched Barbarian. I can’t remember which book blogger recommended it but thank you because it was pretty good. Alot of jump scares and I like the casting. The ending was very unexpected.

Also I’ve watched a few new to me Christmas movies in November. I think I’ll be highlighting Christmas movies with my updates posts throughout the season because why not. 🙂 Have you watched any of these? I’m a sucker for holiday films this time of year. I re-watch my favs every year.

* The Christmas Train – This was very good, great cast too. A train setting and a little bit of a mystery with a second chance love.
* A Christmas Movie Christmas – Another cute one, two sisters wind up in a Christmas movie and this one had some cute funny moments. I would re-watch it one day.
* Christmas on the Bayou– This one was worth the watch and I liked the setting, but it’s not one I’d re-watch. I think they could have added a stronger male lead in this, the guy was kind of dorky.
* The Christmas Lodge– This one was a re-watch and it’s kind of corny but a cute one about a woman who goes back to visit a lodge she spent time at with her family as a child and helps to restore it.
*Christmas at the Ranch– This was a let-down which is too bad since the premise sounded good and this was my first time seeing a F/F Christmas romance movie. The central characters actions and the dialogue were just ridiculous, and the plot became odd and awkward unfortunately.

That wraps up my updates for now. I hope you have a nice week and a Happy Thanksgiving! Here’s Otis on a walk last week, enjoying the fresh air. He’s wearing one of the sweaters I’ve crocheted for him, I’ve been meaning to make him a new one for this year.

Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 11/13/22: A Fun Week and Updates

Happy weekend, I hope this post finds you well. Another week flew right by. The weather was unseasonably warm here all week, we hit the upper 70’s a few times but today it’s pretty cool out in the 50’s so it feels like Fall. I had a busy week, but I’ve been off since Friday and took tomorrow off to make it a 4-day weekend which is much needed. We went to a book signing this past week which was really great. I’ll share more about that under the mailbox section of this post. I also attended the annual work awards dinner which I hadn’t gone to in a few years. It’s nice because the venue is beautiful, and we get cocktail hour, dinner, dessert and an open bar and the valet is complimentary. All you have to do is show up pretty much and it gives me a reason to get dolled up which can be nice sometimes. The filet mignon was very delicious.

Onto my bookish updates….

Book Spotlight: The Road to Christmas by Sheila Roberts

Author Guest Post: Operation Mom! by Reenita M. Hora

coming soon:

My thoughts will be up tomorrow for In Her Highlander’s Bed. Finally.

in my mailbox:

We met Terry Crews!! He was so nice! He’s on tour for his new children’s book called Terry’s Crew and we also grabbed a copy of his memoir Tough. He signed our books and it was definitely an awesome moment. I googled him and I had no idea he had such an inspiring story to share. I’m looking forward to reading his memoir. My daughter was the one who mainly wanted to meet him she’s a fan of his from Everybody Hates Chris. I really mainly knew him from White Chicks. Makin’ my way downtown….. 🙂

watching:

I finished watching season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale. I liked this season alot and the final episode was so good. I’ve heard season 6 will be the final one.

I binged Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. I am so glad I stuck with this because I almost gave up on it after episode 2. Episode 2 was just gross, it was mainly about rats, corpses and claustrophobic settings. Did I mention the rats? Giant rats. I made it through maybe 10 minutes of episode 3 because it started off being nasty too, then I jumped ahead to the 4th episode and the show got much better. The final episode was awesome. Andrew Lincoln stars in the last episode and he was fantastic. Have you watched this?
I also watched Don’t Worry Darling and it was pretty good overall, though I wanted answers to some things but that’s ok.

crochet:
I’m working on a bag for a friend. I’m nearly done, I’m finishing up sewing in the lining and crocheted two handles. I really dislike sewing so that part is taking me forever, but you can’t leave a crocheted bag unlined or things will fall out of it. This bag is made up of 13 granny squares.

That wraps up my updates for now. What have you been up to? Hope you enjoy your week ahead. I’ll close with a pic of Otis. He went to the groomer yesterday and this will be his last grooming until Spring since I like to leave his long coat for the winter months.

Happy weekend, I hope this post finds you doing well. Happy November! That was fast. This is another favorite month since we’re still hanging onto the nice Fall weather.

It’s been an interesting week. I wound up dressing up as a zombie nurse for Halloween and my daughter dressed up as the mad scientist that turned me into a zombie. We had a fun time getting our costumes ready and handing out candy on Monday. And the weather has been amazing this past week. We had such a gorgeous day yesterday with a nice breeze and temps up in the 70’s. We drove out to our favorite park and sat by the lake yesterday. I’ll share pics at the end of this post.

Author Guest Post: Sticks and Stones by Chelsea DeVries.

coming soon:

Was reviewing more books not one of the reasons I bought myself my beautiful laptop? lol I SWEAR I have reviews coming up soon. My blog cannot just be about me talking about myself on the weekends with a few book spotlights sprinkled in between during the week. I love sharing the book spotlights with you all and I hope you enjoy them, but I definitely need to get back into reviewing.
I do have guest posts coming up for these:

in my mailbox

Knot Bad Amigurumi by Vincent Green-Hite. Look how cute!! Vincent is pretty well known in the world of crochet so I’m looking forward to making something from this book to share with my review.

Author Michael Cordell sent me a copy of his latest Conviction. I’m excited to read this one because I read his other book called Our Trespasses and really enjoyed it.

I received a copy of To Catch the Setting Sun by Richard I. Levine for a December review. How cool is this cover?

That wraps up my book updates for now. I’ll close with a few pics from the past couple of weeks on our walks and day trips. What are you up to? How’s your reading and reviewing going? Enjoy your week ahead!

With my son. I caught our shadows.

I like the way the view is mirrored here in the water.

Otis loves going for his walks and wants to explore everything.

Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 10/23/22: Reading, Crochet etc.

Happy weekend all. I hope this post finds you well. I can’t believe October is almost over and Halloween is right around the corner. I still haven’t decided if I’m dressing up this year but I’m headed to the Halloween store this weekend to take see if any costume catches my eye. This past week flew right by. I read one book for Fraterfest and I finished up my Fall shawl. My jaw seems to be healing well, thank you all for the kind comments on that last week. I’m going on Monday to get the stiches removed.

onto my bookish updates…

recently on the blog:

My thoughts on Shifting and Shenanigans by Elizabeth Pantley are up. This was a fun read.

coming soon:

I read If It Bleeds by Stephen King for FraterFest so my thoughts will be up this week. I’ll be watching Mr. Harrigan’s Phone on Netflix this weekend to go along with one of the short stories in this book.

I’ve got an author guest post coming up this Wednesday for Nunzio’s Way by Nick Chiarka.

in my mailbox:

The Cowboy Who Saved Christmas by Jodi Thomas, Sharla Lovelace, and Scarlett Dunn via Amazon Prime.

watching:

So we watched the new Elvis movie. Tsk tsk tsk. Sigh. Austin Butler who plays Elvis did a phenomenal job and he was the only good thing about this film. I like Elvis and even though he’s before my time I enjoy his music, it’s definitely timeless. So I don’t know what the heck was going on with this movie. They ruined it with having Tom Hanks with that strange face makeup pretty much narrating the whole thing. The movie was really mostly about how awful Elvis’ manager was, so they should have titled it differently, so you know you’re going to watch an almost 3-hour long film about Elvis’ manager.

Then they glossed over the fact that Priscilla was just 14 years old when she met Elvis. They also kind of glossed over his pill addiction. And at one point there was modern day music in the background. Um, it’s an Elvis Presley movie people, use Elvis music not Doja Cat. Thanks. And why was there an Eminem song playing during the ending credits? I’ll stop ranting now and include a cute Elvis song here with my post. 🙂 Have you watched this one? What did you think?

crochet:

I finished up a Fall shawl. I used a granny stitch on this one and changed colors each row. I love it.

That’s all for now. I’ll close with a few pics of Otis modeling his new pumpkin sweater I ordered from Amazon. He’s such a ham always. Enjoy your week! What are you up to?

Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 9/11/22 Updates

Hi all. I hope you’re having a nice weekend. Thank you everyone for your kind comments last week about my hive issues/allergist appointment. I realized later on how whiney I sounded, I really shouldn’t be complaining about something so trivial like having to wait to see a doctor.

This past week flew by so quickly. I worked fully remote the whole week which is always nice not having to commute to and from the office. The weather has been great this week and I can already feel Fall around the corner with the cooler mornings and evenings. I crocheted alot and am just about finished with the Halloween blanket and I finished reading one book. Today I got a few posts scheduled for upcoming blog tours and I scheduled a review post for this upcoming Tuesday.

I took this pic of the view of the Freedom Tower from the ferry to Liberty Island a few years ago:

onto my bookish updates…

coming soon:

My thoughts on Our Trespasses by Michael Cordell will be up this week.

in my mailbox:

I treated myself to the new Stephen King on release day and I promised myself I’d read it this month.

Crochet Magical Creatures 20 Easy Amigurumi Patterns by Drew Hill came via the publisher. How freaking cute is this?!

The Frederick Sisters Are Living the Dream by Jeannie Zusy came via Atria books and it sounds both emotional and entertaining.

Also of note…
2022 Fraterfest Challenge
Fraterfest is coming! Will you be reading along? I may or may not make a list, I haven’t decided yet. Making the book lists is half the fun though.

crochet:
The 28 Halloween blanket squares are complete and I sewed them all together already. I’m working on the border and that will most likely be finished by the time this post goes live so I’ll share the finished pics next updates post.

The weather was beautiful this past week, this is Otis on one of his walks. Enjoy your week! Happy reading.
