The Sunday Post 5/7/17: My updates, crochet and Bon Jovi

sundaypost

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…

Good morning everyone 🙂 I hope you’re all doing well. I’ve been trying to play catch up in blog land this weekend. I find that sitting at the computer all day at work, 40 hours a week, leaves me not wanting to get onto my computer at home. *note to self invest in a laptop*

On a bookish note, I have been reading and crocheting when I’m home, mostly crocheting. I am in the middle of two books at the moment, both non-fiction and both enjoyable.

Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison by Piper Kerman and Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach. I have to say Gulp is really very good, I hope to have the reviews up in a few weeks once I am finished reading. Who knew there was so much to discuss when it comes to digestion?

On the crochet front, I’ve been slightly obsessed with planned color pooling these few months. It’s tricky at first but once I got the hang of it, I was hooked. Pun intended. I can’t look at variegated yarns without wanting to color pool them now. Color pooling is a technique where you place the yarn colors in a certain way to obtain an argyle look to the piece or to get a color based design. So far I’ve made a few scarves, cowls and and am finishing up a second blanket hopefully by the end of this weekend. I used Marly Bird’s tutorial to figure out the technique when I first started. It’s great because I only use the skeins of multi-colored yarn so there’s no color changes with loose ends to weave in as I crochet. It’s all about placing the colors properly to make it look argyle.

And on another note, I saw Bon Jovi in concert in NYC a few weeks ago. Oh my gosh, they are still so good.

I went with my daughter and we had a blast. She likes the music too so it was alot of fun. Bon Jovi is one of those bands I grew up listening to and from hearing me play the music my daughter likes them too. The first part of the show was the new music, the second half he did the old stuff. He rocked it, he even jumped into the audience at one point.
Seeing them sing You Give Love a Bad Name was bucket list worthy.

That wraps up my updates for today. Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy your weekend! What are you up to?

  1. Because of The Television show, Orange is the New Black is so talked about. I have heard that it is such a good book. I look forward to reading your thoughts on it.

It is awesome that you and your daughter went to The Bon Jovi concert together. I still love a lot of the musicians that I grew up with in the 1980s myself.

    • Hi Brian, yes, it was so great seeing Bon Jovi perform.
OITNB the memoir is so different from the tv show, so far both are good though.
      Happy weekend.

  2. Happy weekend, Naida! I love to see photos of your crochet work, and your cute little fur baby! I know what you mean: I work on a computer pretty much all day, so I don’t always want to go on my home computer in the evenings for blogging purposes. (However, I probably won’t get a laptop, as I already have enough devices.) Anyway, I’m glad you and your daughter enjoyed Jon Bovi together. I watched (the first season of) Orange is the New Black. It’s a very good series, which delves into the backgrounds of the women, although it was bit graphic for me (I don’t think it needs to be so explicit).

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, Naida!

    • Hi Susan, thank you. So you can relate to the computer, it’s hard to find blogging time.
I like OITNB the show too, I agree it is graphic. Some of it is too much information…lol. But overall, I really like the background stories like you mention. This last season made me tear up at one point.
The Spanish ladies crack me up, with their little clique 🙂 Also, I like Red and her storyline. I actually do not like Piper in the show. The memoir is totally different, the characters from the show aren’t really in it. And it’s not sexually graphic like the show is. The real Piper is telling her story and it’s not as racy as the tv show at all.
      Anyway, happy weekend!

  3. I understand about not wanting to sit in front of a computer once home after being in front of one all day at work! I feel that way too. 😦 And I do have a laptop!

I enjoy Mary Roach and hope you are enjoying Gulp. My favorite of hers will probably always be Stiff. I have Orange is the New Black on audio, but haven’t gotten to it yet.

How cool that you were able to see Bon Jovi in concert! It sounds like a lot of fun. 🙂

I hope you have a great week, Naida!

    • Hi Wendy. i wonder if I got a laptop if I’d get onto blog, I think I would though. Comfy laptop blogging in bed sounds like my cup of tea.
I am enjoying Gulp, I want to read Stiff also.
Yes, Bon Jovi was excellent live 🙂
      Happy weekend too!

  4. I totally get the computer allergies! I used to get that a lot when I was working 8 to 5. I still do, although I’m freelance now. Sometimes it helps if I use the phone for that though. There are also nice reading aloud apps that you can use to read back blog posts to you 🙂
And that looks like an absolutely beautiful crochet project. Love the colors. I can’t believe the colors are spaced out so evenly that they always repeat the pattern? So awesome.

    • The computer allergies! yes! I didn’t know about those reading apps, I will have to check that out.
And thank you about the crochet. Yes, the colors in the mixed yarns tend to repeat themselves every few inches. So not all multi-colored yarns pool correctly, only the ones with a certain color scheme.
Happy weekend and thanks for stopping by 🙂

  5. Hi Naida,

    What a great post!!

Neither of your books would particularly appeal to me, however I love the cover art for ‘Gulp’ and there has been a very similar prison series running over her in the UK, although I have only heard about how good it is from friends and colleagues, rather than having watched it for myself!

Hubbie and I were a little too early to appreciate Bon Jovi music fully, although my brother was an avid fan. Some bands and singers just manage to stand the test of tme so easily, whilst others struggle on regardless of any image issues which may have developed.

The one thing I hate having to do is either sew, knit or crochet in loads of loose ends when I have finished an item, although I shall have to go and watch the tutorial (probably more than once) to fully grasp the idea of colour pooling. As always, you make it look so easy and effortless!

I have loads of blg tour slots to prepare posts for and some great author guest posts with which to do it. All I need to be able to provide is the time to get everything together and collated – and that’s where the trouble begins!

I hope that you enjoy whichever book you read next and have a good week 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne. Thank you. I think I know what U.K. prison series you are talking about, I watched one episode of that one but I never continued. I forget the name of it.
I agree, it’s nice when favorite musicians stand the test of time.

I don’t like weaving in loose ends either, so it’s nice that color pooling has minimal weaving in.
Good luck with getting the blog tour posts together and ready to go. I can relate!

Have a good week and don’t worry about the typos 🙂
