Appearing on random Tuesdays, Really Random Tuesday is a way to post odds and ends–announcements, musings, quotes, photos–any blogging and book-related things you can think of. I often announce my book giveaway winners in these posts….The lovely Suko hosts RRT.
Here’s my randomness…
Several weeks ago I became somewhat Tudor obsessed as I binge watched the whole series on NetFlix during semester break. The show which follows King Henry VIII’s life from his first wife until his death, was very good. Although they did take some liberties with the timeline as far as deaths and whatnot I really enjoyed it. I snapped the picture above, and if you take a look, you might agree with me that Henry VIII did not look like the actor who plays him Jonathan Rhys Meyers. I didn’t mind and I think Rhys Meyers did a great job portraying the famous monarch. There is nothing wrong in making the king good looking for the show’s sake right?
There is just something fascinating about that era and the way these people lived. There was so much drama and so many hidden agendas at court it really is interesting to think about.
As usual with anything having to do with history, I Googled as I watched and I found Henry VIII’s letters to Anne Boleyn online. Follow this link if you’d like to take a peek: The Project Gutenberg EBook of The Love Letters of Henry VIII to Anne
Boleyn.
I was surprised at the tone of the letters and at how at times the king was so sweet and romantic considering the fact that he had Anne charged with treason and incest and eventually had her beheaded.
MY MISTRESS & FRIEND, my heart and I surrender ourselves into your hands, beseeching you to hold us commended to your favour, and that by absence your affection to us may not be lessened: for it were a great pity to increase our pain, of which absence produces enough and more than I could ever have thought could be felt, reminding us of a point in astronomy which is this: the longer the days are, the more distant is the sun, and nevertheless the hotter; so is it with our love, for by absence we are kept a distance from one another, and yet it retains its fervour, at least on my side…
Reading-wise, one of my favorite authors is Philippa Gregory and I have really enjoyed reading her Tudor books. I know some don’t enjoy her books because she strays from historical facts, but I always find her very entertaining, especially The Other Boleyn Girl.
Have you read any Tudor related books? Have you seen the show?
On another note, while I watched The Tudors I crocheted a blanket. When I posted this on Instagram, I called it my Tudor blanket and I think it will always remind me of the show. I wanted to use up my scrap yarn and thought this would be a great way to do that. I used a pattern for a granny stitch ripple from 100 Colorful Ripple Stitches to Crochet by Leonie Morgan, which is a fantastic pattern book.
As usual, Otis is never far off, especially when I am crocheting. He loves to throw himself on my projects. I think he finds them cozy.
That’s all for now. Thank you for stopping by and enjoy your day.

I fear I am a bit Tudored out, but maybe I will get back to them one day 🙂

Hi Naida,
The crocheted blanket looks lovely. I have several half finished ones on the go and I am struggling to work out why I keep starting another, without finishing any of them off. Normally my OCD tendencies wouldn’t allow this, but I seem to be going through a strange phase right now, including in my reading, which isn’t good!
I quite enjoy the odd Philippa Gregory book, although I would rather that the fiction was intermingled with a few more salient facts about the period.
Mind you, I could say the same thing about Jonathan Rhys Meyers … Anyone less like Henry Vlll you would never find! The fact that he is good on the eye has nothing to do with it I suppose 🙂
Thanks for sharing and enjoy the rest of your week.

Hi Yvonne. I know what you mean, I try to stop myself when I start up a new project with one already halfway done. I know crocheters and knitters call those UFO’s (unfinished objects). There are even several UFO crochet and knit-alongs online that crafters join in an effort to finish the projects up. I have two baby blankets to make next since a good friend of mine is having a baby in June so my hooks are busy over here.
lol yes, Jonathan Rhys Meyers is definitely easy on the eyes.
Enjoy your weekend 🙂

Hi Naida,
I checked out the crochet – along, what a brilliant idea!
The idea of having several UFO’s hanging around the place is slightly quirky and something I am sure hubbie wouldn’t be able to get his head around 🙂
I have recently found out that I am going to be a great-aunt in September, so I am wondering which project to get stuck into first. I do have to be a bit careful though, as my niece is quite an organised person with some very strong ideas about what she does and doesn’t want, so it is probably going to be best to have a conversation first, rather than waste my time on something she really doesn’t want and won’t use!
Good Luck with your baby blankets. Do you know if it is a boy or girl, or are you opting for neutral colours?

The blanket is beautiful, Naida. And Otis, of course, is always adorable. 🙂 I have only read some about the Tudor family. Most of my knowledge of them comes from movies and school, probably. They are intriguing though.

I also Google history related things if I am watching or reading something historical. We are so lucky to be living this information-age. It was not that longs ago when this was not possible.
It looks like Otis is really happy with that blanket!

What a beautiful blanket! You did such a great job. I don’t blame Otis for wanting to hang out on the blanket – so cozy!
I went through a Tudor phase too and loved reading The Other Boleyn Girl. Have you read Brief Gaudy Hour by Margaret Campbell Barnes? I really enjoyed her novel.

I haven’t read Margaret Campbell Barnes. I will have to look her up. Thanks for the recommendation!

I agree with the others here – that’s a gorgeous blanket.
When I was a kid I had a phase where I was really into English kings and queens, and I remember reading a lot about the Tudors. But the stuff I read wasn’t this passionate, risque re-enactment, so maybe I should revisit the subject as an adult 🙂

There is definitely alot of scandal at the Tudor court!

Otis is so darn cute!!! I was trying to teach myself to crochet this winter but didn’t get very far. I think that I would learn better if I had someone actually teaching me rather than trying to watch Youtube videos on it. LOL! I’m going to attempt again later this summer when the kids sports get close to ending and I have more free time. I love the blanket though! You are quite talented!
