Sunday Post: Bookish Best of 2017

sunday (249x249)
The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…

Good morning blogland. It is very cliché but where did this past year go? It went by so quickly. I feel like the older you get the faster time goes. We had a nice White Christmas last week and now the temps are really dropping. Single digits this week especially at night and early mornings.

I wanted to take a minute to thank you all for taking the time to stop by my blog and read my posts and leave thoughtful comments. I have known several of you for many years and I appreciate our online friendships. I have also met some new blog friends this past year and it has been awesome chatting books and finding new blogs to visit. To all my blogging friends, Happy, Healthy New Year. May 2018 be full of good books, good health and joyful moments. xo

Well, I rounded up a few of my favorite bookish things from 2017 to share with today’s Sunday Post. It is always fun to reflect on the past reading/blogging year.

Here are my Bookish Favorites of 2017 in no particular order alongside my Christmas cookies. This is the recipe that I’ve been using for years and it never fails. The key is to line the cookie trays with parchment paper when baking so they don’t burn.

Favorite Books of 2017

I read 20 books in 2017, which is my usual for a year. I am still trying to get that number up to 50, I will try again in 2018. I find a month or two out of the year where I don’t finish reading a single book at all, so I’m going to try to change that. I was able to finish one last Christmas book yesterday just in time to finish off 2017 which was nice. For some reason I don’t like to bring last year’s book into a new year.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom This is one of my daughter’s favorites so I read it and it became one of my favorites as well.
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins I read it then watched the movie and this was a solid mystery thriller.
Crescendo by Amy Weiss A gorgeous and poignant read.
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson I finally read this classic and was very impressed with Matheson’s futuristic take on vampire/zombies and at the influence he left on the genre.
Destiny by Rochelle Wayne This book made it to my favorites of the year not so much because of the book itself, but the reading experience was fun. I co-read it with my daughter while on vacation.
The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick I loved both the film and the book.
Christmas at Conwenna Cove by Darcie Boleyn This was a sweet Christmas contemporary romance that left me sighing.

And the book that had me on a thrill ride was:
pretty
Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter This book blew me away and had me up late night reading and then left me with a book hangover.

My DNF for 2017 was: Orange Is the New Black by Piper Kermanor

I tried and I tried again and I still remember trying. I just could not get through this one, I made it about halfway. It actually threw me into a reading slump. It also sucked because I purchased this one at Target to read during an upcoming snowstorm. I enjoyed the series so I just don’t know, the book just paled in comparison.

Reading Goals for 2018

In 2017 I read 4 romances, 1 non-fiction, 2 crime thrillers, 3 short story collections,  2 mystery/paranormal thrillers, 1 poetry collection, 4 general fiction titles and 3 Christmas themed books. What I’d like to read more of in 2018 is more crime thrillers and horror. I feel like I was not scared enough during my reading in 2017, so I’m thinking more Stephen King and definitely Karin Slaughter this upcoming year. I also don’t want months to go by where I don’t finish at least one book. And of course, I still want to continue tackling my TBR mountain.

  1. I know what you mean about time flying. It sure does. I can’t believe we are almost in a new year. Looks like you had a great 2017 and I hope 2018 is even better. Happy New Year!

  2. Time does fly faster these days…I know it is because I’m having fun! Have a great New Year….I also loved The Girl on the Train when I read it, in 2015 (I had to look that up on Goodreads!). I also have the movie, which I’ve watched a few times.

I also loved Pretty Girls. I have Silver Linings Playbook waiting to be read…this year, perhaps!

Thanks for visiting my blog, and Happy New Year!

  3. The last four months of the year certainly flew by for me, but the first several seemed to drag on and on. It’s funny how differently we each can perceive time, isn’t it? A white Christmas sounds so nice! There is little, if not chance of that where I live, which I know my daughter is sad about.

I love the quotes you shared, Naida! I wish I was better at tracking quotes in books. I sometimes will highlight them (in e-books) or use a post-it (in print books), but I never remember to go back and document them. 😦

It sounds like you had an overall great year in books. I read the Mitch Albom book years ago and really enjoyed it. I would like to read I Am Legend sometime soon-ish. Maybe in the next year. The Girl on the Train was a good one too!

I am sorry about Orange is the New Black. I have that one on audio, so maybe it will go better for me? I keep putting it off though. I love the show and know the book isn’t anything like it. Maybe that’s part of my problem.

Your cookies are making me hungry! I hope you have a wonderful New Year, Naida! I look forward to spending another year with your via our blogs. Happy Reading!

    • Hi Wendy. I know what you mean, the first three months drag, for me it’s because of those long, cold winter months, today it’s freezing out. Plus the sun sets early so it makes it feel even colder.

I love finding good quotes in books, I usually put a little sticky note on the page or I will highlight ebooks too.
I hope you enjoy the audio of OINTB if you get to it. I Am Legend was wonderful.
Happy New Year and happy reading!

  4. Happy New Year!! And yes about time… 2017 flew by! We had a white Christmas too and it’s been cold here as well. Seems like everyone is getting cold weather lately!

Pretty Girls looks good, I’ve heard good things about Karin Slaughter.

  5. Naida, thanks for sharing your books, thoughts, and cookies (they look wonderful)! I enjoyed your Bookish Best post for 2017. I can’t believe that it is now the last day of the year. Have a very happy New Year’s and 2018!

  6. Time does seem to go by faster and faster as the years go by.

I also never read as many books as I like. I tend to read long ones so that is a factor. Hopefully we will both read more in 2018.

Happy New Year’s to you and your family!

  7. Hi Naida,

I can only echo and agree with your thoughts about the infinite value of the online friendships I have both continued, and made new, over the past year. Although I may have self induced stress about my lack of posts published and books read, the support I have continued to receive has kept me going when times were tough.

I love the idea of sharing your favourite book quotes and liked them all, although I decided that it would be the one by Rupi Kaur which I was going to add to my own list.

You picked a varied mix of your read books to share, but I guess it will come as no surprise that I have already selected the Paula Hawkins and Karin Slaughter as two of my must reads for 2018.

I hope that you enjoyed your Christmas and New Year celebrations and that 2018 will see you happy, healthy and with some great books to read 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne. Online friends are wonderful. Yes, I try not to stress myself out about posting. I find that if I’m at least reading, the computer can wait. Also I stopped committing to blog tours etc and the stress was lifted alot as far as blogging goes once I did that. I didn’t realize how much time and commitment that was taking until I stepped back.

Paula Hawkins and Karin Slaughter are good ones, I enjoyed their writing. Especially Karin Slaughter.
      Happy 2018! xo

  8. Your cookies look delicious! I loved reading about your bookish favorites for 2017. Orange is the New Black was a DNF for me too, which bummed me out since I love the Netflix series so much. Hope you have a wonderful 2018!

  9. Yes, how does time fly by so quickly! I wish we could just hit pause and catch up a bit right? Anyway how wonderful that you are now enjoying some of the same books with your daughter. And, I keep seeing that new Karin Slaughter book everywhere. I think it’s a sign I have to read it. Hope you have a great reading year ahead!
