Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 7/28/19: Reading and Relaxing and Antiquing

sunday (249x249)mm
The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…
Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….

Good morning and wow people, it is the last Sunday in July. Summer always goes by so fast. I’m actually on stay-cation for a little now while which has been nice and relaxing.

I love not having to wake up early and rush rush rush. Always rushing. Rushing to work, rushing home, rushing to appointments…it’s exhausting. I’ve de-cluttered my closet, I’ve been lounging around the house, getting in the pool when I feel like it, reading and crocheting…it is great not having a set schedule. We’ve been doing day trips here and there as well so I’ll share pics at the end of this post and next week’s updates post too.

Onto my bookish updates….

recent reviews:
no one
I posted my thoughts on No-one Ever Has Sex on Holiday by Tracy Bloom which was a great summer read.

coming soon:
goodbyeparis
I’m actually almost finished with Goodbye Paris by Mike Bond. This is a review book and I’ve been breezing through it.

in my mailbox:
cro1
Cuddly Crochet Critters: 26 Animal Patterns by Megan Kreiner who is an animator at DreamWorks Animation is in my mailbox this week. I am so excited about this one that arrived via Dover Publications. How cute do these patterns look.

Watching:
I’m still watching Ancient Aliens which is great for binge watching. Those Mayans knew everything. They knew all the secrets. Also, I’ve been catching up on another favorite The Dead Files .
And now I’m missing Big Little Lies since season 2 is over. I really enjoyed both seasons. Renata is my favorite, Laura Dern is fantastic. And Meryl Streep oh my gosh, so great.

I’ll close with pics of a recent day trip. We went antiquing and it was a beautiful day spent walking in a small town that’s a little over an hour drive away. We walked around and looked at different shops and boutiques and we stopped for lunch at the cafe in town. This small town is known for the antique shops so there’s plenty to see.

I’ve seen enough scary films and read enough Stephen King to make this woman’s storefront the stuff of nightmares lol. Located off on a side street, once inside there was so much, including plenty of mannequin heads lined up along a staircase. This woman lives here as well as it being her shop. I could never. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night to use the restroom and seeing so many mannequins? No thank you. Just look at the top left window with the curtain just lightly open. It was a pretty cool shop though and I would definitely visit again. The owner was really nice.

This house was nice and a little strange because from the front entrance you’d never guess there is this staircase leading to two more floors upstairs. This old house is huge but is set in between two other buildings. I could hear vintage 1920’s music coming from up these stairs. It was almost like stepping into another time. Those old stairs were very creaky.

Once upstairs my daughter found a little vintage picture frame here for $2.00. Antiquing and thrift shopping is her “thing”. She has a knack for it.

Do you go antiquing or thrift shopping? What are your favorite things to collect?

That covers this week’s updates. Thanks for stopping in. Enjoy your week!

  1. Hi Naida,

We have quite a few antique and vintage shops around us, being as we are so close to the City of Bath. We both enjoy browsing when we get the spare time, although we seldom buy anything, as that that is just not the style of our home. Also, as hubbie quite rightly points out – where do you draw the line between vintage/antique and simply overpriced tat and rubbish! We both quite enjoy checking out the old toys and vinyl most of all.

I don’t really ‘collect’ anything in particular, although the idea of a bookmark collection often goes through my mind. Hubbie would disagree, citing all the hundreds of books we have on bookshelves all over the house. Not to mention the huge stack of jigsaw puzzles waiting to be made up and the dozens and dozens of packs of knitting wool, which I need for the many projects I am going to start – one day!

‘Goodbye Paris’ sounds like a good, fast read – nothing too taxing! Although I have to say that that this is the first time I have ever come across an “existential thriller” – I really can’t keep up with all the new sub-genres which keep popping up!

Have a great week and thanks for sharing your week 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne, that’s a good point about where is the line drawn between antiques or just junk and just hoarding as well. lol I can relate to the books and the yarn. It’s hard to resist.
Goodbye Paris has been pretty good. I didn’t realize it’s labeled as an existential thriller until you pointed it out. That’s interesting. My thoughts should be up this week.
      Enjoy your week ahead!

  2. I’ll have to file away Goodbye Paris for next July. It looks like it would be perfect for next year’s Paris in July. If you get time you may want to add your link to its review to Tamara’s blog, Thyme for Tea.

I hope you have a wonderful reading week!

  3. Staycations are so nice. We honestly need time to relax and decompress at times, and staycations can be so good for that! Hope yours is awesome.

Renata is the bomb haha! Love her.

Antiquing is so fun. We were on vacation a couple years ago and found this HUGE store with several stories, and the stuff in there was just incredible!

  4. Summer does go by too fast.

I also rush around too much. I often work very long days. Add that other life responsibilities and things do get exhausting. This summer I have at least been taking a lot of three and four day weekends.

Of course, there is never enough time to read.

    • Hi Brian, I know, it goes too fast always.
That’s good you have been enjoying extended weekends. It’s definitely needed.
Have a nice week ahead and hope you get some good reading time in.

  5. I love it when I don’t have to worry about schedules! During school terms, I feel like I’m constantly playing catch up but when summer break rolls around my son not being at school takes a lot of that pressure off. I love it.

I’m glad you’re having a nice break and I look forward to more pictures!

I was eyeing Goodbye Paris at NetGalley and the crochet book is so you.
I love the scary mannequin storefront description!
I enjoy antique/thrift store shopping. I tend to pick up small items for Christmas and gifts. Otherwise I just like looking.
    Have a good week.

    • I am enjoying being on stay-cation. Goodbye Paris is interesting so far and since I’ll have free time this week I’m planning on having my review up soon. I cannot wait to make something from the crochet book.

I like antique shopping as well, mainly for looking also but it’s nice if I find something special. It’s almost like a treasure hunt in that way.
      Have a good week too!

  7. The Crochet Critters book looks fun!
My summer is going so fast. Life is busy between seeing to my mom’s care (she’s 85 and in memory care) as well as spending time with my grandchildren a few days each week. Staycation is the only option but we’re enjoying the warm weather and time spent outdoors. Have a good week!

    • The crochet book is so cute.
Summer flies by too fast and life is always busy and even busier when you are taking care of your parents as well. That’s nice spending time with the grandkids a few days a week.
Enjoy the weather and I hope you are reading good books this week !

  8. Naida I love to visit vintage or antique shops. We have a lot in our downtown area. We’ve bought various vintage items f over the years, including furniture and knick-knacks. Enjoy Cuddly Crochet Critters! It looks like your kind of book. I could see you crocheting a doll that looks like a mini Otis.

Happy reading/watching in the week ahead!
