Sunday Post/Mailbox Monday 10/20/19: Book Updates and Sightseeing

sunday (249x249)mm
The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog…
Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists….

Good morning and happy Sunday. It is a nice brisk Sunday morning here. We have had some gorgeous Fall weather lately and I’ve been enjoying it. I have had a busy couple of weeks and enjoyed a few days in Gettysburg PA  recently. War history is usually is not my thing but for some reason the Civil War has always fascinated me so staying in Gettysburg has been on my wish-list for some time. I will share a few more pics at the end of this post if anyone wants to see.

Reading-wise I have managed to get some good reading in these few weeks and am finishing up my 3rd book for the month. With the 24 hour read-a-thon next weekend I hope to get another book read then. I have fallen behind on return blog visits, I will be getting to blog hop today and this upcoming week. Thank you all for stopping in and commenting as always.

That wraps it up for now. What are you reading? Watching? Doing?

I will close with photos of beautiful historic Gettysburg PA. Have you been? I saw the battlefields, visited the National Military Park and museum, saw where Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg address and we took a tour of the Jennie Wade house among a few other stops. There was a lot of walking that trip and the weather could not have been more perfect in the 70’s and with the sun shining. We also took a lantern lit ghost tour the first night we were there. Gettysburg is said to be a hotbed of paranormal activity if you’re into that kind of thing. I think it may be true with so much that went on there during the battle. It was amazing getting to visit these historic spots in person.

This is the side door of the Jennie Wade house , she was the only civilian killed during the battle at Gettysburg. Those are actual bullet holes from Confederate fire and the one on lower right on the door is from the bullet that hit her while she was baking bread. The Travel Channel listed this house as one of the top haunted in the country. Did it feel funky in there during the tour? Yes it did. We toured the house including the cellar.

I really wanted to see the memorial to the Gettysburg Address. Getting to visit the Soldiers’ National Cemetery where President Lincoln arrived to deliver his famous speech was very cool and the highlight of my trip.

Also on my must-see list was General Lee’s Headquarters.

Lee led the South and he and his troops were tented out all along this area.  The widow who owned this house cared for the injured soldiers here as well during the battle, both Union and Confederate.

All in all, a fantastic visit to PA and I want to go back again to see more.
Enjoy your week!

  1. Thanks for sharing your Gettysburg photos. That’s one my list of places I want to visit. I’ve just been waiting for my son to be old enough to truly appreciate the historical significance of the area. Hope you have a great week!

  2. Hi Naida,

We have had so much rain here just recently that it has been more like spring than Autumn. A dry weekend has been very welcome, although it is too late for the gardens, which are like a bog now!

Both of your reviewed books have found their way to my TBR pile, so thanks for the recommendations!

I like the cover of the Jenny Colgan book, but I have to be in the mood for stories which are a little too ‘cozy’, so I might keep it on the back burner for the future!

We author and maintain ‘Treasure Trails’ for our little area of the country, so we take in as many of the historical and cultural aspects of a town or city as possible. It gets us out, keeps us fit and we learn plenty into the bargain. Having a place like Gettysburg in our portfolio would be a dream come true.

Lovely pictures really help to set the scene and I am pleased that you enjoyed your time away 🙂

    • Hi Yvonne, it seems like you have alot of rain across the pond. I hope it has let up.
I can’t wait to get to cozy Christmas books, I am planning to do that in November. I’ve seen a few more that have caught my eye.
Your ‘Treasure Trails’ always sound like fun, enjoy!

  3. Great pictures. As you know I love history AND Gettysburg is such an important place. I am interested in almost everything there. The Gettysburg Address was of course, one of the defining moments in American history.

  4. My favorite wars to read about are the Civil War and Revolutionary War. So I would love to visit Gettysburg some day also. Of course, before I went it would be good to read up and decide what I want to see most. Planning can be almost as fun as doing a trip. I hope you have a wonderful week and enjoy your reads!

  5. Happy Sunday, Naida! I enjoyed learning about your trip to Gettysburg. It would be an interesting, historical place to visit, especially for those of us with a penchant for Honest Abe. Enjpy your reading in the week ahead!

The Christmas book looks so sweet and I have been eyeing the “Paw” books. I just picked up an earlier one on NetGalley so thanks for bringing it to my attention again.
Enjoy your cooler weather and Happy Reading!

  7. We lived in Gettysburg – well, just outside, for a couple of years about 20 years ago. I always loved walking the battlefields and seeing the monuments. A lot’s changed as far as the visitor center and stuff goes since I worked there, I’d love to go back sometime.

  8. I am a fan of US History during those days. I remember reading Johnny Tremain in school and have been a fan of Paul Revere and his ride to warn about the redcoats.
I’m currently listening to Keep Calm and Carry Yarn while eating a bowl of Nongshim spicy noodles with some veggie bites that my tween thought looked so weird yesterday.

  9. My dad was really interested in the Civil War and my husband is a little bit. We would like to visit Gettysburg someday. That’s where my parents honeymooned. I do enjoy Jenny Colgan’s novels. I hope you are enjoying your reading. Deadly Ride looks cute. I hope you have a great week, Naida.

  10. You took great pictures! I studied history, so I’ve been to a lot of war sites. I always find them very interesting. So quiet.

Brother is on my list to read. I’m really interested to read it. It does sounds disturbing.

    Have a great week!

  11. I’m so glad you got to Gettysburg. You weren’t too far from where I live in Maryland. I love seeing the re-enactments. you should plan a trip there when they do those. It really is an experience you won’t forget. The second time we visited with friends looking for ghosts — it was interesting, but nothing paranormal.

    • We had a great trip and are planning to go back next year. I do want to see a re-enactment next time. I felt like it could be a haunted place for sure, and the Jennie Wade house in particular gave me unsettling vibes. I felt claustrophobic in there.
      Enjoy your weekend!

  12. Work has been crazy for me as well so I understand falling behind on blog hopping, etc. I would love to visit Pennsylvania. I’m going to miss out on the read-a-thon again this year but there’s always next year right? Hope you are having a great week!

    • Ugh, work is too hectic.
I am skipping the read-a-thon this time around myself, I ended up with a dentist appointment today then I have errands later so I couldn’t clear my calendar.
      Have a great week too!
